…and on the To-Do List is the Crazy Horse Memorial and Mount Rushmore. First up…Crazy Horse Memorial…it’s huge. It’s a publicly funded project—entrance fees, donations and proceeds from souvenir and food sales all help to make the work on the memorial happen. There are no federal, state, county or city funds involved. The parking lot is really big and RV friendly. As you enter the main building you are encouraged to watch a short film about the sculptor, Korczak Ziolkowski, how the memorial came about and the first 50 or so years of the project. It’s quite informative and, for my Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing friends out there, captioned. From there you can tour the Native American museum which is pretty big, go outside and see a 1/34th scale model of the memorial as well as the ... read more

…was a short drive day as far as distance went, but longer because we drove through and stopped several times in Badlands National Park to take pictures. Wow. It looked like a miniature version of the Grand Canyon. Parts of it also reminded me of eastern Washington. It was super RV friendly. The pull-outs along the windy, twisty road were long enough to accommodate even really long RVs. The parking lots at the scenic overlooks had parking along the curb designed for extra-long vehicles. The main road looping through was nicely paved…no potholes, cracks, crevices or frost heave bumps. There are a few dirt side roads, but they recommend not taking RVs through there as rain may make them impassable. There was plenty to see on the loop road so you didn’t feel like you were ... read more

…was another Point A to Point B day...with a teaser of what's to come. We’re coming into some iffy weather now. Yesterday on our way to our parking lot for the night we ran into lots of rain, wind and some very dark clouds. The weather is unseasonable everywhere. Today the weather wasn’t so bad, but at we were driving through the southern part of Minnesota the windmills in the wind farms we passed were earning their keep. Minnesota is the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” but what qualifies as a lake? We passed a handful of bodies of water and I would count them down…”9,999 more…9,998 more…9,997 more…” Mike called them cow ponds because they weren’t really big enough to be lakes. Neither of us knew if these were part of the 10,000 or not so ... read more

We decided to go back to Deadwood, SD and check out the town. We were told to take the scenic route so that is what we did.. Amazing waterfalls and huge blocks of granite were seen along the way. The town of Deadwood is an old mining town that has been through it all. The town was totally destroyed by fire then in the early 1900's there was a big flood. We saw a shoot out in the middle of the street where a guy got shot in his forehead. The drama of it all. Wild Bill Hickok was killed in Deadwood and is buried there. Calamity Jane also lived in Deadwood and you know story about their hot romance. She is buried right next to him. The cemetery is at the top of the town ... read more

Yesterday we went to Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse with friends of ours from Colorado Springs (John & Jill). We all were amazing at what we saw. Mount Rushmore was built by a creative genius. It was stunning and beautiful at the same time. I was so glad I had purchased a 500mm camera lenses before we left for our adventure. Thus the amazing close up pictures of Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln. Crazy Horse was a very interesting project. Built strictly on private funds it has been a slow process to build. As you can see from the pictures it probably won't be completed in even our grandchildren's lifetime. The purpose of the project is a worthy one. Google Crazy Horse to get the details. The scenery in the park around Mount Rushmore was beautiful ... read more

Day 13 We had a nice breakfast (always nice when it's free, well...), ok, we hit the road by 9 and had a nice drive through the Crow Indian Reservation and past the Big Horn Mountains and on to the Badlands. If I didn't say it before, the Badlands are "killer bad"! It's definitely worth the extra hour it takes to cruise through, it's pretty much right off the highway. The side trip kind of set us back, but..., were on vacation! We ended up stopping in Mitchell, South Dakota ( home of the world famous corn palace!). Didn't stop in and tour the corn palace but we did have a nice dinner at a ruby Tuesday's. We are hoping to make it to our humble abode in Waynesville, Ohio tomorrow, but we may find an ... read more

Here are the pictures from the trip thus far. There are pictures from Texas, Nebraska & South Dakota. We thought we were moved towards cooler country. NOT! It was 97 here yesterday. Plus the thunderstorms and flooding have followed us. Tried to BBQ last night but were rained out and it looks like no BBQ tonight.... read more
