Sturgis, S.D.! The city known for the largest motorcycle rally in the world. This year is the 70th anniversary and the bikers will be coming in numbers. They expect to have between 300 to 500 thousand bikers for the rally. Cities for 100 miles around will be filled to capacity with bikers and their friends. When we left Custer, 75 miles away, they were gearing up for the event by sectioning off the middle of the downtown for places to park the bikers. Wall, S.D., about 90 miles away, was also planning on the population to double in the next week. The event of the year lasts for 10 days but the crowds will be here a week before and a week after to celebrate this 70th year. While I had always wanted to visit Sturgis ... read more

Traveled to Sturgis, SD, stayed at Bulldog Campground. This campground is really in an open field, but was neat and the scenery was great. Rode into Deadwood, SD and made our donation to Cadillac Jack Casino :-). Returned to the campground and enjoyed a bar-b-que pulled pork dinner with triple choclate ice cream desert. ... read more

Wednesday and Thursday, September 9 and 10 We took our time departing Sundance Wednesday morning. The drive to Sturgis, South Dakota took hardly an hour. It took awhile to find our RV campground; the Voice on our computer Street Atlas got confused about some turns and such and placed us on a dead end road which we had to back our way out of. This was the second time we have been dead ended by the Voice. Nan jumped out The Beast with her walkie-talkie and walked and talked the rig back down the street, through an intersection from which we could extricate ourselves. After receiving directions from a woman crossing the street, we arrived at Mount Rodney RV Park, a big rig friendly Passport America, half-price discount establishment. My ideal! We paid $40 for an ... read more

"Keep close to Nature's heart, yourself; and break clear once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean." John Muir After traveling a mile through meadows and forest, we began to see Elkorn Mountain, with dramatic peaks and rock outcrops. Climbing steeply, the trail emerges onto a ridge where users can see the back of Mt. Rushmore. Two thirds fo the way to the top is a popular outlook and hitching rail for thsoe who take their horse to the summit. This is the most popular route to Harney Peak...Trail #9. It leads to a fire tower built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), now on the Register of Historic Places. The trail is steep, but the rewards include stunning views of four states. Harney Peak was ... read more

I'm so sad we have to leave the Bed and Breakfast this morning. It was foggy this morning when we got up, but I'm sure it will clear off before too long. We head down for breakfast. Again, fantastic. Today we had: egg bake, rhubarb bread, coffee cake, fresh fruit, coffee, juice. Helen is so nice and you feel so welcome. The couple from WA will be leaving today. The couple from WY will be meeting up with some more friends and spend a little more time. On our agenda today is Sturgis. By the time we head out the fog has cleared up. We take the frontage road pretty much all the way to Spearfish. We jump on the Interstate there and pull into Wal-mart. Steve had stopped and ordered DVD's of his Beartooth videos. ... read more

What's hot: Devil’s Tower What's not: Hog Heaven Travel lesson of the day: Vegetarians are not appreciated in the Hamburger Nation. Odometer reading: 6,053 in the morning, 6,429 at night from Kathy: Herds of antelope play in the fields along the highway beyond Gillette, WY (I call them ‘cantaloupe’ to irritate the kids). We drive. Small oil wells pump. Coal cars line the endless train tracks. I hope I remembered to turn off the unnecessary electronics in the house before I left. What is the difference between oil and propane and natural gas? Blueberries and huckleberries are advertised everywhere in these August places and I wonder about my berry plants back home. We are on the way to Devil’s Tower National Monument and there are five Christian churches hovering along ... read more
