Devils Tower and Custer

Last night the wind roared over our heads, but we were sheltered by trees and hedges in the campground.

This morning we drove east on I-90 from Buffalo through rolling green hills; grazing land for cattle, horses and sheep. We saw the occasional mule deer and more than a few pronghorn. At Moorcroft we headed north/northeast to the Devils Tower National Monument, a monolith looking starkly out of place. We watched climbers scaling its nearly vertical walls. This being the July 4th weekend, there were crowds of people there.

We came down through Sundance, Four Corners and Newcastle on our way to Custer, SD. We stopped briefly at Jewel Cave National Monument. The campgrounds in this area are all crowded and most are full. We expect big crowds tomorrow at Mt. Rushmore.
