Monday, September 14, 2009 Well, yesterday we stayed put at the Hart Ranch because of bad weather, the need to wash a few duds and the bidness meeting. We showed up at the appointed time of 10 a.m. at the Ranch Lodge, but nobody told the sales guy that he had a meeting with us. So we told the lady at the front desk, “What’s going on here anyway?” Well, that got things stirred up, but not much. The presentation was low key; kinda like pulling teeth. We learned that we could buy sort of a time-share like interest in Hart RV campground for only $2525, but we still don’t know what that means, except there are also annual dues of $250 and a daily staying on the site rate of $2.50. “Boy howdy,” I exclaimed. ... read more

The last two days were spent traveling through South Dakato and Wyoming. I am awe struck at the magnitude of the west. Farms that stretch for miles and roads that connect one small town to another. What must life be like for these families? How and where do the children go to school? A bus ride would be for hours. I drove by a town called Lost Springs with the population advertised as 1!! The Black Hills are spectacular and carved within them is Mt. Rushmore. The honor given to the four presidents who began this country and kept it going in the spirit of freedom and liberty is told in this majectic sculpture. Just north of Sturgis, SD is a beautiful drive through Custer National Forest (different from Custer National Park). The white rock just comes out of nowhere in the green rolling hills of northwest South Dakota. Here are a few photos I took on a recent drive to Rapid City. ... read more

Driving through Custer National Forest is one of my favorite routes to take from North Dakota to Rapid City. Custer National Forest is located in the northwest section of South Dakota so not to be confused with Custer State Park located in the southwest corner of South Dakota. Custer National Forest also runs in sections west into Montana as well. I'm not sure why I like the route through the Forest so much. The striking white and pink bluffs with green trees just rise out of nowhere in the rolling grass hills of that section of South Dakota. In doing a little research on the parks site, they call them "castles" and they are made of limestone. They just don't look like they fit in at all.
