We decided to spend most of hurricane season here in Charleston. And we are very thankful that our first hurricane season while living on the boat was a non-event. Although we did have one scare, when Ernesto was coming right towards us. But we battened down the hatches, secured the lines, and had ourselves a kickin’ hurricane party with all the other cruisers. In the end the winds of Ernesto died down significantly, the hurricane was down-graded to a tropical storm, and its path veered north of us. So we were spared- yeah! I am happy to report that it was no worse than a winter storm. Besides that, we have just been hanging out in Charleston with our friends here and exploring this great city. It has become our non-official home port and Salty Mikes ... read more
Smiling Faces, Beautiful Places
Published: September 9th 2006North America » United States » South Carolina » CharlestonCharleston, South Carolina. I don't really know what to make of it at the moment, but the shipping yard we're residing in is not very exciting. I actually had the day off today, so I did manage to venture off the ship long enough and catch a ride to WalMart. But not just any WalMart. It was a supermart Wal Mart. I've never seen such a one stop shop for the masses in my humble, sheltered existence in Los Angeles. It was bigger than CostCo. So today I feel a bit refreshed because I didn't have to work. You're lucky I didn't have a chance to update yesterday because the constant work and lack of recreation was starting to take it's toll. The ship has become a giant construction zone, and I've been working everyday in ... read more

Cooper River 10K Bridge Run 4/1/06
Published: April 15th 2006North America » United States » South Carolina » CharlestonThis was the first year over the new Bridge. It's really become an event, 33,000 crossed the finish line. You have everything from the elite Kenyan runners to walkers who dress up in funny outfits. Patty did real well finishing in the top 12% in her age group...I managed to keep up with her. We're certainly not hardcore runners but we did train for this one, this run becomes the goal and reason to exercise and train. The view from the top of the bridge is awesome, you can see all of Charleston harbor, Fort Sumter, the Battery park area and the Yorktown in her mooring. Personally I like going for the low country cooking!! Charleston is one of our favorite cities and this is destined to be an annual event for us.... read more
Charleston The Beautiful
Published: April 11th 2006North America » United States » South Carolina » CharlestonApril 8 Drove through the picturesque town of Beaufort, SC on our way from Hilton Head to Charleston. Lovely ante bellum homes and a national cemetery which is still in use, but dates back to Civil War. Arrived at James Island County Park. Storm, including funnels, hail and thunder kept us in on Saturday night. This is a great park, wonderful facilities including three separate bike path loops, a dock for crabbin’ and fishing, etc. We reserved seats on a shuttle from James Island to Savannah on Sunday morning ($5. round trip). Could take same to Folly Beach. April 9 Sunday was another awesome day - round trip shuttle from the park. We got into Charleston by 9:30, took in the orientation film at the visitors center. Hopped a trolley toward the center of the historic ... read more

Nature vs. Nurture
Published: March 22nd 2006North America » United States » South Carolina » CharlestonHello Everyone, nice to be with you again. Hope everyone is doing well. You might be wondering about the title of this blog. I'll explain. I'm not sure we could have had a more contrasting week than the one we just had. Primarily, the contrast came from going from the serenity of the Everglades National Park to the madhouse of 400,000 "Irish for the day", party people in Savannah for St. Patty's day. Nature, being the alligators, birds, and plants. Nurture, being the magnitude of revelers indulging in the second largest St. Patty's Day festivities in the US. So, are you with me here? Not sure I am either, but you get the point. Its been an interesting week, to say the least. Driving south from Tampa to the Everglades, it became very clear that Florida ... read more
Sushi Boat and More!
Published: February 16th 2006North America » United States » South Carolina » CharlestonPreparations for the journey ahead are going well and we are making progress on the Rum Runner. The name of the boat was painted on last Thursday, and we had a small christening party (although we decided against the traditional champagne bottle breaking on the bow of the boat, and decided to go with pouring rum drinks on the stern instead- we figured it was more appropriate). So she is now officially the Rum Runner and no longer referred to as Beneteau 473 hull #197. We have also commissioned the sushi boat, our dinghy. We bought the sushi boat and motor on Super Bowl Sunday. While everyone else was watching the football game, we spent 6 hours in West Marine negotiating the purchase of the sushi boat. Since then, we have been busy inflating it, getting ... read more
Another Week in Charleston
Published: February 13th 2006North America » United States » South Carolina » CharlestonSo here we are, another week in Charleston. Not a lot to report this week, we are still just getting the boat ready for the trip. Most days have been spent hanging out in the marina so that work can be done on the boat. But we are getting really anxious to pull up the lines and set sail. It is kind of a catch 22. We really want to be spending the days sailing, maybe practice our anchoring and doing a couple of overnight trips around here to get used to how the boat handles. But if we go out sailing, then the work can’t be done on the boat (and this is work that needs to be done before we can leave, like putting up the bimini and installing the solar panels). So ... read more
Dark and Stormy
Published: February 4th 2006North America » United States » South Carolina » CharlestonLast night was an interesting one. It all started like a normal Friday night here. Around 5 when everyone has finished work for the week and the weekend has begun, everyone from the marina heads to Salty Mikes for a drink. Salty Mikes is the locals bar at the marina and is just a hole in the wall place, very rustic with a lot of character. We have enjoyed going there because it is a great place to meet other sailors and swap stories. Last night we made friends with a delivery captain and his crew. They have sailed all over the world, across the Atlantic and thru the Panama Canal 4 times, moving other people’s boats for them. He gave us great advice and taught us some new tricks, all over a couple of dark ... read more
The weather was nice for a few days, sun and mild winds. We had just packed up the boat enough to even consider going out, so it was time. The thought of going out by ourselves in an area we don’t know well and on a boat we are just starting to learn was a bit frightening. But we remembered how we felt with our last boat on the first few times out and realized that we could do it. We also we starting to feel the need and the desire to start the sailing trip and not just the provisioning trip. So we decided to go solo. We almost got there the first time. Keys in the ignition, lines ready, items all stowed. But at the last second, we decided a quick break to review ... read more
