Why and How So, we have rented out our house, I have quit my job and we are moving to Costa Rica for seven months. Surprised? Jealous? Concerned? Well, you’re not alone. At this point, I think we’ve heard it all. The two most common questions we’re asked (and two most difficult to answer concisely - the way I usually answer questions) seem to be “Why are you going?” and “How did you come up with that idea?” Of course, the questions aren’t usually phrased like that. They’ve ranged from “What, are you crazy?” and “How did you come up with a bird-brained idea like that?” to “That’s wonderful, I wish I could do that.”
Now, as I think back, I can’t remember exactly how we came up with the idea. What I do remember is that, independently and simultaneously, sometime last winter, Dara and I both arrived at the idea to do something - although we didn’t know what - starting in the upcoming summer or fall. I guess this is where some of the “why” comes in. (In the interest of not boring everyone to death in just our first installment, I’ve tried to just hit the main reasons and keep them fairly short.)
First, our kids are at the right age. Ari is still young enough to think his parents are cool (no telling him the truth, or else…) and young enough not to be too distressed about leaving his friends. We also felt we could handle the school thing - either by finding an acceptable school for the period or home schooling him if we had to. We’re relatively confident that we can still handle second grade math. In addition, Eliana has become a real trouper - past the stage of needing to ride in strollers or be picked up. Also, she is now old enough to get something out of the experience.
Second, we’d like our kids to learn that there is a world out there beyond Yardley (suburban Philadelphia). Don’t get me wrong - Yardley is a fantastic place and we know how lucky we are. We love our house, our neighbors, our friends, our synagogue, and everything else. We’d like to expose Ari and Ellie to other people and other places - show them that not everyone lives in a big house with a big yard, two cars and every creature comfort. We want
them to know how lucky they are too.
Third, I guess you could say Dara and I are ready for some adventure (we did live in Belize for 6 months 9 years ago and in London for 9 months 16 years ago -- hmm, a pattern?). Dara has been a stay-at-home mom since Ellie was born. It is true that she really enjoys her time with our children. And her work on the Board of Directors for our synagogue, Kol Emet, and selling educational children’s books keeps her busy. She, like me, however, still hasn’t “figured out what she wants to be when she grows up” and before she does that, or maybe in order to do that, she’s feeling a desire to travel and, hopefully, do some volunteer work while we’re away.
And then there’s me. I‘ve been working at the Sunshine Bouquet Co., same place I’ve been since graduation back in 1992. And, although I’d done many different jobs within the company - from operations management to purchasing to IT management, I’ve been doing only sales for the past couple of years. While I’ve been doing well and I’ve enjoyed the flexibility of working at home, I, too, am interested in a change, but don’t know what that change should be.
So this is where we were. One day in maybe late November, I heard an interview on NPR with a woman who works in a government ministry in New Zealand who was discussing the huge up-tick in information requests from Americans interested in emigrating. Of course NPR attributed this to the reelection of Bush. As many of you know, we are no fans of Bush and had done our part to try to defeat him (really the first bit of political activism for either of us). Leaving the country because of the president was not a factor in our thinking but this interview did plant a seed in my mind.
So, that in a nutshell is the why. Next installment - how we came up with Costa Rica.

Dara, Mark -remember me, I was one of the lucky one's who shared time with you In Belize, all those years ago- in fact I think I taught you both to play football, OK soccer- you yanks!
Anyhow I am currently in Moscow- Russia,- via Belize, mozambique, Angola and my family Julia and Hope- aged 6 - Julia is a bit older (she is my wife)! are doing the living abroad thing...again!
I think once you have your kids settled in school, nursery etc you will relax and have a great time- I do hope so.
Hope loves her School here and that is v important for us. Moscow is not as hot as costa rica (I went there once in 1988- pretty groovy place I seem to remember -Limon had even bigger cockroaches than Belize city!)
Anyhow you will be fine, leaving the USA and George bush must be fantastic in any case- why do you think we have not lived for any length of time in Mr Blair's England...I left the day he got elected.
So good luck down San Jose way- great flowers there too you know.
Hasta Lluego or paka Zavtra do svedanya as they say in Russia- I'ts forecast minus 4 tomorrow and you think you have problems
Take care
Mark
I suggest you start a second blog, aimed at Ari. Subscribe him so that he gets a daily report, and let him write and post his daily reports there.... Let him get his friends to subscribe to it. You and Dara can post shorter, sanitized entries for him there, too.
You know you have my full support. Keep up with the blog, it's great! Your next big trip when you get back will be to Pittsburgh!
Sounds exciting to me! I'll enjoy living vicariously through your family. Good luck, and have fun.
Hi!!Well you know I've always been supportive of that idea I think it will be a wonderful experience, and I'm very happy about you, and I can see all the excited you are about it, if everybody were as open-minded as you guys everything would be different! I guess we all need to go out sometime and see that there is a REAL world out of the borders of our "own little world" some people just dont realise that...I really think this is great and you are amazing, I hope you enjoy it and I wish you luck.......
And if you have any question about the language...here I am!!!:P
Love!!!
Hi guys,
These are great reasons to go on your trip. Eventhough we miss you already, we are glad you are going. We also left the U.S. for a period of time a few years back as you know. Although it was a completely impractical, economically senseless thing to do, both us and the kids had an awesome time and an enriching life experience. Love the Blog - keep it going and enjoy every moment. And...yes..we fall into the jealous category. Love, the Gellers.
Having lived abroad and left suburban NJ to retire to the wilds of San Francisco's Mission District (a.k.a. the Banana Belt) we endorse your sense of adventure and your educational motives. Great suggestion for Ari to write his own blog. We'd love to know his impressions, and Ellie's, too. Godspeed!
Virginia and I look forward to living vicariously through you during the next several months.
Even though I don't really, I am happy that I know people who will undertake an adventure such as this - and will learn and grow from the experience. I wish the best for all of you. I will read your blogs everyday.
So sorry I didn't get to see you guys before you left. I just got back from Dublin and had no idea you were leaving that weekend. You will be truly missed around here...but I'm so excited for you and know you are going to have a wonderful and enriching adventure. Loved your blog - what a fantastic way for us to tag along on your adventure. I/we definitely come under the category of "jealous" - we're beginning to get itchy feet ourselves!...Love to you all, Keep safe...
Thanks so much for including us in your spam. Cuz David and I will be excitedly reading about your travels and new experiences; plus, we're sending prayers for your health and well-being. As parents of kids your age, we would probably wish that you'd stay in the U.S., but as people of the "more mature persuasion"...ahem...we applaud your courage, daring, and sense of adventure. This is priceless for your children. Great idea for Ari to have his own blog!!! Keep everything coming. Have a blast. Love, Cuz Bev
Dara, don't think you'll remember me but you mom and i went to Vassar together. Despite your parents' misgivings, I think it's a great venture and hope you find it to be so too.
Jeff got us into the Blog, and now I've subscribed.
Keep it going!
