Last night we had our first get-together for
HI - Get Happy!
This was our first one, and we plan to continue to meet up again every month.
HI-Get Happy is a way to connect with other local members of the Hostelling International community during happy hour for a travel discussion group. Part of HI's mission is to gain a greater understanding of the world and its people through hostelling and HI-Get Happy is a way to meet other travelers to gain new insights and a greater understanding of our community and world.
And it's fun! Last night we met up at
Imbibe and had a great time talking with eachother and sharing travel plans and recommendations. We checked in about the recent Women Travelling Solo that Karin led at Portland State and shared ideas for Mike's upcoming trip to Europe and Sean and Lauryn's plans in Central America this summer.
We had ten people attend this month's event, including Shawn, Mike, Karin, Therese, Maria, Laurel, Lauryn, Shakaya, Kate, and Sean. It was a good turnout for our first one and the group represented the Hawthorne Hostel, the HI-Oregon board, council volunteer management interns, program volunteers and others with a passion to travel. We hope even more people can make next month's HI-Get Happy.
Also, Imbibe has a great happy hour and our waitress was fantastic.
Last night we had an open discussion, but at future HI-Get Happys we may identify a topic beforehand or have ideas brought up at the beginning of the meeting for a more focused discussion. Additionally, one of the council's educational programs is
World Travel 101 (intended for the beginner travel) and another opportunity for future HI-Get Happy meetings is to have a brief
World Travel 202/Independant Study presentation for anyone interested in discussing a place they've gone.
Our June meeting will be on a Monday, probably June 16th, in Northwest Portland near the NW hostel. Keep posted for updates on the date and location!
