Traveling from Memphis, TN to Oklahoma City, OK. We go from Memphis to Arkansas. I didn't like the first 2 hours of Arkansas, it looked flat and uninteresting. Sort of anywhere, USA. Closer to Little Rock, Arkansas got beautiful. I think I like seeing mountains - it is so different from where we live. All of Oklahoma is beautiful to me. The day is overcast, looks like big thunderstorms may be moving in. It doesn't rain on us, but the sky makes everything look lush and green. We are relaxed, just enjoying the trip.... read more

Here we go, off to the other side of the world (more or less). Packing wasn't as terrible as I thought it would be.. but I'm taking a pretty big suitcase (and an extra one for souveniers ha). I took a picture of it because I just wanted to see how they worked.. I know a packed bag isn't all that fun to look at. =D. It's a little scary thinking about having to do everything by ourselves, but I know we can manage because it's also really exciting. We're headed to Chicago tonight and then we have an early flight to catch to London. All this waking up early stuff won't be easy. (We also have to get up early our first morning in London to get to where our tour starts.) I'm so very ... read more

At this time 4 days from now, Lauren and I will be checking into our hotel in Chicago (hopefully) on our way to England! (We have a rather long layover, but hey whatever works for me.) I'm hoping that we'll be able to find some internet cafes while we're in Europe to keep you updated. I'm so excited, and a little nervous but I try not to think about it. I've got to go work on packing. I went shopping today because I realized I only own one pair of shorts. I understand we have to wash clothes in the sink, but I didn't think that would work out so well. I'll let you know how the packing goes though. Have a happy 4th of July everyone! ... read more

Day One is securely locked away in the constructs of three memory banks, assuredly a little different for each, but I have the pleasure of beginning the online dumpster that will help us keep tabs on the enormous amount of stimuli we’re about to encounter. Travelblog, you’re in charge of keeping these things clear. Here’s how mine unloads. Miles Traveled: 590 Hours Driven: 12 Cities Landed: Saint Louis, Missouri / Tulsa, Oklahoma In Saint Louis, the GPS system (nicknamed Andrea for companionship purposes) began leading us through the city to the Arch, only to take us to a road that was completely submerged in water. The banks of the river had swelled and engulfed the entire entryway to a nearby casino boat, leaving the highest signs and trees as little islands in the disaster. The streets ... read more

We got up early and rushed over to the Flying Ranch office. The owner's daughter, Christina, was set to take us all on a guided horseback ride through the ranch. None of us were experienced riders so we opted for an hour ride through the country side. Both of the kids did really well on horse back and we all had a great time. After the ride, the owner took us all in his pick up truck out into the pasture to see the bison and the long horned steer. We drove right up to them and they posed for pictures for us. Dave gave us a great tour and answered all of our citified questions. If you're ever in Sayre, definitely check out the Flying W Guest Ranch! 6. We started wondering about the difference ... read more

After the storm passed, we fixed coffee and had breakfast, then started to break camp. But the next round of storms came before we did any more than dry off the outside and do dishes. So we got a late start. So What. And I'm not going to say anything about Kerry barking and meowing at the ducks this morning. We crossed the Arkansas River just before getting on the Muskogee Turnpike in Oklahoma. The river was muddy, fast and out of its banks. We took the Muskogee Turnpike to Tulsa. What a nice road, so much better than I-40 to OK City. Tulsa is a pretty town, clean, with lots of trees. West of Tulsa both the Cimmaron and the Arkansas Rivers were high with muddy brown water. The Cimmaron Turnpike west to I-35 ... read more

We were doing great beautiful day awesome road. Highway 9 is fantastic. Doug do you see that black cloud over there? What about that big white cloud over there? Oh my look at that White cloud, it is rolling at the top like "Pipe Line" does in Hawaii. Do you think that will become a storm? We decided to gas up if it is a thunderstorm or ? we better have a full tank of gas. It is getting pretty dark and the two clouds seem to be getting close together. That is how tornadoes form. Doug says we can out run this lets get going now. Hmmmm getting really windy now and darker. It's ok the road is starting to turn in another direction we will be ok, says Doug. I don't think we are ... read more

On our arrival in Oklahoma we patiently waited for any contact regarding our storm chasing tour. That patience turned to agitation as the hours ticked by and we found ourselves pacing the room between making further phone calls and sending more emails. Whilst doing this, the weather channel reported almost non-stop during a busy weekend of twisters, including Parkersburg (Iowa) where seven people would eventually lose their lives. Dejected, confused and perhaps understandably angry, we began to make plans for leaving Oklahoma and attempted to start picking ourselves up after coming to terms with the fact that not only were we not going to be storm chasing, which was supposed to be a major highlight of the trip, but we had also parted with over $4000 and didn’t know if we were going to see it ... read more
