We had a slow start to our morning. I enjoyed coffee out on our screened porch and listening to little critters in the forest behind our cabin. By 10am, we were ready to hike and set out for the state park visitor's center. Yesterday, we drove by the visitor's center in the afternoon, and the parking lot to the visitor's center was full. There was an overflow of parking onto the shoulder of the road. When we pulled in today, we were surprised to see how big the parking lot is. It's huge! It's crazy to think it was completely full yesterday. Today, it was about half full. I'm not sure if it's because we were there in the morning compared to the afternoon or if it's because it's a Sunday instead of a Saturday. Either ... read more

My grandma was born 100 years ago today. Some of us had casually been talking about having a family reunion (our last was in 2016). My aunt mentioned that it might be nice to do something in honor of my grandma's would-be 100th birthday. So, we decided to plan a reunion in honor of her birthday! Last summer, I spent some time putting together possibilities for a reunion and sent it to my aunts and uncles. The idea they liked best was Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio. We lucked out that a new lodge was opening at the state park in October 2022. It meant we could utilize that option for the reunion in July 2023! About half of our family opted to stay in the lodge. In addition to lodge rooms, there is a ... read more

Today, we're finishing our drive to Ohio. From Tinley Park, where we stayed overnight, it's about a six hour drive. I'd forgotten that we lose an hour and incorrectly estimated when we'd arrive! The drive was uneventful, which is a good thing. We pulled into Hocking Hills State Park around 6pm. We're staying in the state park cabins but needed to check in at their new lodge (the lodge opened this past October). At the lodge, I quickly found my parents, my brother, some cousins, and some aunts and uncles. Some of the kids were heading to the lodge pool, so our kids quickly suited up and joined them. There is an indoor and outdoor pool and hot tub. I loved that the kids got to move a bit after being cooped up in the car ... read more

On our way to this campground Nate stopped off at a few parts stores to see what the stock was for 16 spark plugs since the closest part store to the campground was 30 minutes. Of course, none of them in the area had 16 spark plugs in stock so we ordered them. Due to the distance from the campground, we decided it would be best to change them by the auto store just in case something went wrong. Surprise lol a spark plug broke off leaving the threads stuck in the engine block. Thankfully AutoZone had a loaner kit for removal but after looking at it and calling a friend from home that retired from Ford Nate found this loaner was for an older Ford engine and would not work on ours. There was also ... read more

Yesterday we spent the entire day visiting with Nates family in Ohio. I truly had a great time, if we lived in Ohio, I think I would have some new family/friends to pal around with. We also started having troubles with the truck the last 2 days, Nates check engine light has come on. Luckily Nates uncle had a code scanner to check the code, they cleared the codes but unfortunately the next day the engine light came back on. Nate believes from the code he will have to replace the spark plugs, which is usually a simple job, but his truck has 16. Not a hard job but time consuming so he has a long workday ahead of him tomorrow once the spark plugs come in. Our new location has no mobile data access making ... read more

In the popular imagination, Ohio is definitely part of the Midwest, flat and mostly farms. Most people, including some state residents, don’t know that the southeastern part of the state is very different to the stereotype. This part resembles a miniature version of eastern Kentucky across the Ohio River, all rounded hills and sandstone valleys. Like its neighbor, it has some fantastic sandstone formations deep in the woods. Unfortunately, this area also shares two other things with eastern Kentucky, rural poverty and a long history of coal extraction. In the early 1930s, the best of the sandstone formations were incorporated into the Hocking Hills State Park. The trails in this park are described by a plaque at the main entrance as the most fascinating in the state of Ohio. In many places that wo... read more

Distance: 6 miles Rating: Easy-Moderate When you are as focused on hiking as I tend to be, you manage to find opportunities in some of the most unexpected places. My sister and I both decided to take some vacation time to go visit our aunt and uncle out in Columbus, Ohio. This was a special trip for Jill and me, as we don’t get to see Karen and Anthony as often as we’d like to. In addition, I was excited to see the beginnings of the beautiful mid-western autumn, which presents leaf colors rarely seen Colorado. Just like back home, Ohio was experiencing Indian summer conditions and I was ready to take advantage of the warm weather. So we packed up the car and headed to Ohio’s hilly region for one of the more interesting hikes ... read more
