Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, Dayton, Ohio The connections are a bit tenuous, and sometimes appear a little forced, but one can start to understand why this park incorporates what it does. There are two main threads stitched together in this park - One is the life and work of Paul Laurence Dunbar, a black poet often referred to as the Poet Laureate of Black culture. The other is the history of Orville and Wilbur Wright as they struggle, and succeed, to conquer the problem of flight. The two threads cross a couple of times in historical accident, but I think, maybe, there’s a bigger way these three men are connected and it is in that way that this park becomes even more remarkable. The designation ‘National Historical Park’ is not a common one. In ... read more

Wilberforce and Dayton, Ohio We chose this campground primarily because it was in the middle of nowhere. Or, a better way to put it, in the middle of everything we wanted to see in this part of Ohio. Staying here for a while allows us to make day trips out and back to a number of things that were on our list. We decided to start with the closest one yesterday, and that took us pretty much due north about twenty-five miles, first through a town called Xenia (always wanted to visit a town that starts with an X) and then a bit further north on a two-lane road called Wilberforce. Although I didn’t get the history exactly, Wilberforce is the home of two colleges - a private school called, naturally, Wilberforce University, and a branch ... read more

Hello my beautiful family and friends, Welcome to my travel blog!! I am finishing up my third semester at UD, and I have to say it has been absolutely wonderful. I have transformed immensely this semester and I am so content with how things have went. I'm such a happy and lucky girl :) Now for the fun part, SPAIN!! I made the decision to go back in October when I had my advising appointment. I went in just to see what my options would be not expecting it to be much. But when I asked lovely Education Abroad Advisor, "It's probably too late to go next semester isn't it?" She looked at me with a smile and said "No, It's not." And then that is when everything started coming together. I knew Spain was the ... read more

I love Dayton airport. The TSA agents are friendly, helpful, and get you through the lines. It's amazing what a positive attitude can do. They should train agents for all the airports. Time to board!... read more

We headed south from Chicago to see my son Jeremy and his family in Ohio. Jeremy and his wife Rebecca have four kids now, Isaac, Tristan, Charlize, and Noah. Jeremy is 30 years old now and has known his wife since they were 14 years old. Mainly we hung out and ate and watched the kids play and laugh. We also went on a Haunted Hay ride. I have known Jeremy since he was almost 5 years old when I married his mother Nicole. He has a great life, a beautiful family and a nice home. It is a pleasure to spend time with them all. Their kids are so adorable.... read more

MEMPHIS BELLE This Boeing B-17F heavy bomber has become one the most celebrated warplanes in our history. It has come to represent the valor and sacrifice, and all things that were good not only about the Eighth Air Force in particular, but also pretty much about all gallant air crews. Along the way it has become part of the folklore of our country. Neither the plane, nor the crew achieved spectacular success in combat operations, although survival on a bombing mission was spectacular enough in itself. Each mission flew right into the jaws of screeching bloody hell. The bomb targets were heavily defended by Nazi fighters and anti-aircraft artillery and they were beyond the range of our own fighter cover. The Nazis had an early warning radar system that enabled them to know in ... read more

A funny title, since I haven't been to anywhere near aviation since I've been here. Dayton is a very strange place. Perhaps I'm seeing it out of context, at least for tonight. I think Tony did well during his talent portion of the competition. I'm going to let this go here. I really want to say something about my second night in Toronto, but that will take more thought than I have tonight. I had something I had written, but the blog didn't save it. Who knows, I think it was both profound, and very, very embarrasing. Perhaps better left unsaid.... read more

Hello, everyone! I am so sorry I haven't been updating this blog. Since I last posted, I survived El Salvador, Belize, and a return trip to Europe to visit friends and "family." Chris returned safely from Afghanistan, and we're now all settled in to our new lives here in Dayton. I am a graduate assistant and full time student at Wright State, and Chris has a rather stressful job on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. We're trying to entertain ourselves here in Western Ohio as best as possible...perhaps we'll have some interesting adventures this summer. We did manage to find a free week and a half to go back to Europe at the end of March...and this time we had a new travel companion: my brother, Kevin! All three of us had a fantastic trip to Paris ... read more

Now we made it back North to Dayton, Ohio. But the way from Key West to Dayton led over the beautiful small town of Asheville, South Carolina, home of the University of North Carolina, and named 'New Age Mecca' by CBS News. It is located in a lovely setting in the Blue Ridge Mountains (remember 'Am Fuss der Blauen Berge'?), has about 90k inhabitants who are sure its the center of the Universe, and have some excellent restaurants and a vibrant life in town, at least of Friday evenings. Just as Bob and Steve had told us before. This morning we visited a true gem in the Asheville area - the Biltmore estate from George Vanderbilt, a 250 room castle, com;lete with a beautiful garden and some 8000 arcres (32 km2) of forest around it, that ... read more

I woke up today in Dayton, Ohio. Dayton is famous for one thing, aviation. The Wright brothers were based here when they created the first airplane. They flew it at Kitty Hawk (see April 8th) but they designed and built it here. Their house and workshop no longer exist in town (more on that later) but several remaining sites have been turned into a National Park. Since I saw their history earlier at Kitty Hawk, I decided to focus on other things. The military really didn’t believe in airplanes until the Wright brothers did a demonstration for a group of army generals in 1910. Soon after, the army started buying airplanes and testing them for combat. An Army lieutenant, url=http://www.fir... read more
