Rugby was another stop on my way to the International Peace Garden. A stone monument in Rugby, North Dakota marks the geographical center of North America (the world's fourth largest continent). The location was marked in January 1931 by a US Geological Survey. A clever mileage chart tells you how far away Mexico and some other locations are. Also located in Rugby is the Northern Lights Tower. According to the Dakota Day Trips book, the Tower is about 90 feet tall and depicts the four stages of the Aurora Borealis (Northern lights). It has multiple colors reflecting the lights one see [View Full Entry]

Despite living in North Dakota most of my life, I'm ashamed to admit that I have never before been to the International Peace Garden. Decided to finally take care of that. The Garden is located on the US-Canadian border with an equal half on both sides. 2007 is its 75th Anniversary having been dedicated in 1932. Construction on the Garden actually started in 1934 and was built primarily by the Civilian Conservation Corps of the United States. According to a brochure provided, the workers continued working at the site until the calling of World War II. The Garden is almost 2,400 [View Full Entry]

I was travelling on Hwy 85 through North and South Dakota and had reserved my campsite in Medora because there simply wasn’t another campground on Hwy 85 for miles. I had originally planned to stay one night, but about 50 miles away the scenery started to change and when I turned onto Interstate 94 heading for Medora the view from the scenic overlook changed my stay from one to two nights in a hurry. Medora is most unusual. General George Custer stayed here in 1876 on his way to Little Bighorn, All of the sidewalks in the downtown are wooden and [View Full Entry]

From Glentana we set out across the Badlands (early French explorers named this area “mauvais terres a traverse”)- more Big Sky Montana countryside and into North Dakota. The journey was long and hot; we have had temperatures into the 100’s for several days now, which is not very comfortable! If the heat continues we will have to limit our riding hours to the mornings only, which will delay our schedule. Our destination for the evening of 7th August was the Southern end of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park - this was a real treat. The park is dedicated to the 26th [View Full Entry]

Thanks to all of you who have been so patient with me. Unfortunately, the blogs that I had previously posted have been erased due to a failure within the website so I am going to have to start over. What I am going to do is post the main activities that we did each day and elaborate on some of the highlights. From there, if any of you have any activities, sites or experiences that you would like me to elaborate on or would like to see more pictures of, either message me or send me an e-mail and I will [View Full Entry]

North Dakota Driving on the side roads to Theodore Roosevelt National Park included seeing lots of hay growing. However, every time I got out of the car, it smelled like cows. Apparently, the cows were "out to pasture", wherever that meant. All I know is I could smell them at each gas & go stop (my usual pit stop for ice for my cooler, yogurt, and a potty break). Theodore Roosevelt National Park This little-visited national park is a gem. There are some nice hiking trails through the grassland a [View Full Entry]

My nephew is a lover of history so we decided to spend a couple hours on a warm day in the air conditioned comfort of the North Dakota Heritage Center. I hadn't toured the Center for many years. The Museum is very full of items relating to North Dakota's history. So full in fact that they are trying to get the funds to expand because they have so much in storage that they are unable to display. The Center is the largest museum in the State of North Dakota and located on the campus of the State Capitol. There are also [View Full Entry]

June 30 With advice from the locals I hopped on hwy 212 and blasted east. I dropped in and visit the Bear Butte State Park where several Indian tribes regarded the mountain as holy ground and would perform spiritual ceremonies. I'm out of the mountains and traveling across the American plains. Like the joke says "you can see your dog run away for days". I'm battling wicked crosswinds and boredom. I wished had a buysa or ZX14 to "shorten" the long straight aways. I was planning on spending the weekend in Aberdeen, but there are no free hotel rooms. I'm forced [View Full Entry]
