We were up and at ’um at 5:30 this morning because we wanted to make a stop at the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park on our way to Minot, ND via Williston. We pulled out of camp at 8:00 heading north. Along our route we started seeing many oil pumps. The North Unit formations seemed to be taller than the ones in the South Unit...maybe because we were driving more through the “canyon” of formations rather than along a rim. The valleys between the formations were further apart also. Note of interest: we saw a lot of buffalo poop in the road! Therefore we were not so surprised when we did see one buffalo bull lying in the grass close to the road and a herd of maybe at least 25 or 30 buffalo ... read more

We left Chicago yesterday; thankfully getting out despite all the flooding. Woke up this morning to sunny skies and flat land! I had looked at the Geocaching website to see if there was anything to be found along our route at any of the longer stops that the train makes. When it makes "service" stops, it stops for about 1/2 hour so a quick grab of a cache is possible if it's close enough. Sure enough, someone had placed one right across the street from the Amtrak station in Minot, ND. The train pulled in, the doors opened and we were off like a shot, GPS unit in hand. Quickly found the geocache, signed the log and hopped back on the train. For those of you not familiar with geocaching, us geocachers like to aquire "states". ... read more

Quietness. Upon the dawn, the chirping of birds. How pleasant it is here on Sauk Lake. The geese and ducks wander nearby as we prepare to start our day. A long, hot shower on a cool spring morning, a bowl of oatmeal with raisins, toast with crunchy peanut butter, it doesn‘t get any better than this. The nights have been in the forties, but our van has stayed in the fifties at night, very comfortable sleeping temperature. Continuing on Route 94 we are traveling along prairies. Passing a pond on the side of the road, we spot what looks like white pelicans. Ken, are there pelicans this far north? Before long we left Minnesota and entered the state of North Dakota for the first time for both of us. This is a big deal for me ... read more

Again I sit in an airport, only this time it's in Cleveland. I've completed 2 of my 3 flights in my journey home. The next and final departs at 6:05 so I've got about an hour or so until they begin boarding. Thankfully this time I've managed to get myself set up in a Club Lounge so I've got the free refreshments and wireless thing going which always makes waiting a little more pleasant. To recap, I last wrote the day before my birthday so I'll pick it up from there. First off, thanks to all for the birthday wishes which I received by way of voicemail, email, and snail-mail alike! The day was great and ended well, despite the cold and rain that descended on us sometime in the afternoon. Joanna and I went to ... read more

Greetings from Minot! Well I've been here going on a full 4 days and I honestly can't say that it feels a whole lot different from being anywhere else. But I'm getting ahead of myself. To start with, I had no idea the stress that awaited me after I signed off the last time in the PHL airport. My flight was delayed due to another flight coming in which killed my layover time on my next flight. Now you might say, "Cool! Who likes a layover anyway?" Well, I do if it means the difference between having some time to kill reading your book or sprinting like an Olympian through an unfamiliar airport terminal in order to not miss your connecting flight at your NEXT stop. So my flight from PHL was delayed. My flight ... read more

And so it begins. I'm at PHL right now killing time before my flight (turns out I was roughly 3 hours early!!!) This was not my original plan. I mean, yes, those of you who know me know full well my tendency towards being early to things, but not quite to THIS extent. But let me justify. I was somewhat limited in my options... I had to go from work to PHL in time for a 5:45pm flight. I could have left at 3:00, but doing so would have meant potentially cutting it close as I would be contending with two of the worst road hazards known to man: 1) Rain and B) Rush Hour. It's been raining all afternoon and since drivers all seem to become idiots in the rain, even with leaving at ... read more
