Ok so this diary thing is way too behind, and I am missing out on reporting on so many wonderful revelations as they happen. So Duxbury, oh picture perfect Duxbury. I stayed with a family of 4 children and 2 adults who had a lovely house with a herb garden and a lovely guesthouse that I had all to myself. I stayed a few days, visited local horse people, barns etc. The area was all so wealthy and picture perfect it was almost surreal. I was sad to leave the comfortable paradise of the lovely forested suburbia and the lovely family [View Full Entry]

Oh. My. God. How to describe the pleasure of this city?... so shiny, so full, so loud and exciting and wonderful!!! Walk in any direction, aimlessly, and there will be people to watch, shops to peer in at, delicious goodies to consume. The area we are staying in, the east village, has plenty of character but we are fast-discovering that all the boroughs have bucketloads of charm, and that downtown assails the senses (in a good way) with its neon, tacky, busy sights. The guesthouse we are s [View Full Entry]

Here are some photos that we took yesterday while it was raining. You can see some rain drops in the pictures. The last one is one of Toby's 'creative' shots. We haven't edited them in any way- we just played with the settings on our camera and came up with these! [View Full Entry]

Day 79- Friday Sitting here in the magnificent reading room of the NY Public Library on 42nd street in order to use the computer. The internet in my hotel didn't seem inclined to co-operate for me. After my busy day in Boston on Monday, we picked up a hire car in order to go to Cape Cod and Nantucket. This entailed driving a couple of hours to the south, stopping of at Plymouth on the way. Here we saw a replica "Mayflower" and saw the rock inscribed to commemorate the arrival of the Pilgrims in 1620. Then on to Provincetown, on [View Full Entry]

New York! New York! The land of supersize me. Naturally the first thing I wanted to try was a pizza, actually just a slice. Lucky for us there are pizza shops on every corner. I dared to take a pizza with ricotta, spinach and tomato. MMmm it wasn't as greasy as I expected. In fact it was a great combo. The next day we found that lots of convinence stores also have a buffet salad bar (NYC isn't that strict about food regulations) sold by weight. I packed my take away container with 1.25 kilos of salad for 12 US bucks! [View Full Entry]

Here are some photos of our apartment and our neighbourhood. Pretty much all of our furniture was free, cheap, or is borrowed. We have been very lucky! We carried the ficus tree (my mangy pride and joy!) all the way from Midtown on the subway because I desperately wanted something to brighten up the place. We got the plants on the windowsill and the bamboo coffee table from the same people. The lights in the tree were free from a guy in Gramercy, and the TV was free from a lady on East 95th Street (and it was lucky to survive [View Full Entry]

When we got to New York, we checked in to a Hostel on the Upper West Side called Central Park Hostel, which was in a good location but unfortunatly wasn't such a nice place to stay. So after a couple of days i moved to a nicer hostel round the corner and Ruth went to meet a friend from back home who was also there for the week. The weather was amazing and when we arrived they were having a heat wave so it was very humid and as you can imagine, riding on the underground was extremely intense. But as [View Full Entry]

Well it was great to be back in the big apple again, not a thing has changed and even the price of the subway has changed very little since we were last here, meaning that it's even better value than before with the weak dollar!! We had four great days in the city, plenty of sightseeing and shopping and of course good eating and drinking too. One thing that was surprising was the heat! We were absolutely sweating walking around the place it was disgusting..but only because we came from rainy Ireland and we haven't experienced anything topping 25 degrees in [View Full Entry]
