Our 1st stop was New York. We stayed out of town in Long Island City where our hotel was everything we needed & not expensive like the Downtown places. It was hot hot hot & humid in Downtown Manhattan as there's nowhere for the heat to go. It's pumping out of the air-conditioned buildings & up through the grills in the pavements then it stays between the tall, tall buildings where everyone is in a hurry and traffic just keeps coming from every direction. However it was all wonderful & we had to pinch ourselves to be sure it was real. [View Full Entry]

back in nyc and the humidity gives the city a different feel to previous encounters, it's not stifling but the summer heat seems to reveal manhatten in a more lethargic, weary tone... normal chaos and bar hopping, celeb spotting, drinking, eating all the wrong food, central park for sunbathing.....take in a yankees game vs the la angels, stadium which is about to be pulled down at the end of the season is more impressive than the game....through china town , drinking with locals and ex pats, a marathon karaoke session and then weekend in montauq, which is the last town in [View Full Entry]

From DC we headed further up the eastern coast to New York City. First stop had to be Central Park - we spent our first afternoon watching New Yorkers playing tennis and jogging around the reservoir whilst we decided what to do with our 4 days in this crazy city. The park is huge and we only saw a small section of it, but what we saw we found to be very busy yet relaxing at the same time. Throughout the park there are lots of places to sit and rest and there are plenty of optional tours to take such [View Full Entry]

It is now 6.30pm New York time, 1.30am UK time. What a journey here. I have to say that I have travelled with better airlines than AA and also worse. Journey to Heathow was a dream, very little traffic and parking was fine. Terminal 3 is its normal dreary boring self but we soon were on the plane and, after a 30 minute wait took off for our 7hour flight. Excuse me, had to have an ice cool bub then. Food on the flight was terrible and Iwas charged 6 dollars for a gin and tonic. Kennedy airport was lovely and [View Full Entry]

Today we moved out of our Hostel and into our apartment in Spanish Harlem, Manhattan. We're right on the border of the Upper East Side so our block holds an interesting mix of cultures. There is a charming sense of cummunity here- I'm not used to seeing people hanging around outside their apartment buildings, but I like it because it feels like somebody is always watching out for me. Mt Sinai Medical Center is 2 blocks away, so we share our apartment building with a lot of doctors and nurses. The subway station is right around the corner, as is our [View Full Entry]

It's July 31st. lSo, tonight will be a celebration at 'Nettis and a last chance to drink with my NY friends before taking off for 5-6 weeks. Tomorrow should be pretty horrible as I have to pack, get a haircut and shave, pick some stuff up from the tailor and run a bunch of errands before 4pm (when the car comes to get me for the airport) while hungover. I'm off tomorrow at 8PM, Icelandic Airlines out of JFK bound for Reykjavik, so I suppose the next time I talk to you it will be from halfway (sort of) across [View Full Entry]
