Stanley thought, "Maybe I need to look in a completely different part of New York." So Stanley looked on the map and saw that there was another island that was part of New York City...Long Island. And on Long Island is Brooklyn, another borough of New York City. So Stanley decided to go to Brooklyn and see if there were flat people in Flatbush. There was a lot to see: Brooklyn Academy of Music, Prospect Park, and lots of antique stores. But there were no flat people. One of the antique dealers told him that Flatbush wasn't named for flat people. Flatbush means "level meadow" in the Dutch language. That's when Stanley realized that the people from Holland were the first European settlers of New York City.

Stanley thought that since there didn't seem to be any flat New Yorkers, maybe there would be flat visitors to New York. What better place to stay, if you are flat, than the Flatotel. Stanley went through the front door of Flatotel and met Jason, the doorman. Jason told Flat Stanley that the flat in Flatotel came from the British meaning of flat. An apartment in London is called a flat. Jason also said that about a year ago, a woman had stayed in the Flatotel and had showed him a Flat Stanley who was visiting from Colorado. Even though Flat Stanley was disappointed not to find one single flat person in New York City, it made him feel better that a cousin had visited not so long ago. And maybe New York was really a great place after all.
