On my way to sunny Cardiff there had to be a stopover so chosen was good ol' New York, New York. Such a big place, so little time, so what did I manage to cram into 10 days in the big apple?? Well this time I made a list so here goes.....
Arrived to a huge hostel -room for 640 people- spent 20 minutes listening to hitler at the front desk explaining the 'house rules' like I was ten years old and heading off to summer camp!!.
Decided to go to Staten Island with some girls from the hostel coz the hostel's tour was cancelled and we still wanted to go but then got stuck on the subway when a beam of some sort fell on the track!!! So it took 4 1/2 hours in total to go to an island to do nothing. On the way over there was a huge thunderstorm - the start of 8 out 10 days rain- so off to a great start.
Walk through central park
Shopped on 5th Avenue
Hard rock cafe
At south sea port stood (in the rain) to see welsh band 'Super Furry Animals'
but in the end they could only do three songs coz they didn't want to get fried by all the electrics in the rain
Macy's
Dunkin' donuts
Bought a brolly from a street vendor about 3 seconds before the cops chased him away
Bought a hotdog from a street vendor about 3 seconds before the cops chased him away! I think he was just on the wrong corner, who knows.
Walked the length of Broadway for what reason I don't know. It was a very long street.
Rockefeller centre observation deck for a really good view of the city, thankfully on one of only two afternoons that it didn't rain
Century 21
Second hand bookstore browsing
Found Dail's old flat
Bloomingdales
FAO schwartz
Tiffany and co. - if only i could afford to buy something in there!!!
Magnolia bakery, The Pleasure Chest and Scout ( for all you fellow Sex and the City fans ).
Ferry to Statue of liberty, shouldn't have bothered, it was pissing rain and windy and only about ten other people there. At least my photos were very uncrowded..
Visited the
United Nations where there was a really great photo exhibition.
Found Krispy Kreme - why oh why can't they open one of these at home.
Saw production of The Producers - on stage NOT the movie - by far the most hilarious thing I have seen in a very long time. Had no idea that the chemist guy from desperate housewives - as Leo Bloom - would be soooo funny. Wanted to go again but there weren't tickets.
5 hours at the Metropolitan Museum of Art..and still didn't see everything. Amazing egyptian exhibit, and the two huge rooms of old musical instruments were pretty good too.
Fantastic indian meal at the Taj Mahal (why would it be called anything else?)
Natural history museum
Bronx area
Yankee stadium.
Another fantastic meal this time at a brazilian steak house with Margaret of antarctica trip fame, was really nice to catch up with someone I knew.
More shopping for some postcards and souvenirs.
Best thing about New York:
Would definitely have to be Jerrys Grand Tour. Run by the hostel on a saturday morning it was, I kid you
not, a 16 hour walking tour of the city. Starting at 0830 it included the following...brooklyn heights for the view, walk across brooklyn bridge, city hall, woolworth building, st.pauls, world trade centre site, wall st., stock exchange, ferry to staten island, statue of liberty, battery park promenade - complete with lots of hot firemen out for a jog, merchant sailors memorial, korean memorial, a bashed up round sphere thing that used to be at the WTC, chinatown for markets and lunch, little italy, soho, greenwich village, bleeker st, east village, washington square park, veniero pasticceria for dessert, indian quarter, cooper union building, union square, flatiron building, madison square park, empire state building, waldorf-astoria hotel, chrysler building, saks 5th ave, grand central station, st. patricks cathedral, hercules sculpture, rockefeller centre, 6th avenue, and times square..and all for only $10....we finished just after midnight and I don't think Jerry stopped talking about the city all day!!!
Things I find disturbing chapter four:
Walking into a supermarket day one and asking for stuff in spanish, and being answered in spanish, not dawning on me until I left the shop that I was in the entirely wrong country.
Nothing in the
hostel really seemed to work properly, phones, change machines, door cards, washing machines etc, but management wasn't actually responsible for any of it. Why would they be..??
Wandering down to the kitchen in the hostel to find that some thief had STOLEN MY CORNFLAKES!!!. And not just stolen some of them..nooo. This particular charming individual had removed the box from the shopping bag, taken the bag out of the box and replaced the box in the shopping bag on the shelf as if I wouldn't notice!!!AAAAAHHHHHH.
