Well yes folks I have finally arrived!!!! New York is everything I expected it to be and MORE!!!!!! My first night here, I ended up going for a drink with this random guy Anam (don't get worried now Mum)...But as it turns out he was ok, anyways we went to this bar called Smiths...We ended up meeting up with some real New Yorkers! We got into New York on the 14th of December - my birthday!! - and nearly froze when we got out of the terminal at 6am. We made our way over to the "Big Apple Hostel" and got ourselves organised for a few days of sight seeing. We were staying pretty much on Times square, which made sight seeing incredibly easy. Ja, dat lezen jullie goed. Vrijdag ga ik alweer naar huis en zaterdagochtend kom ik op Schiphol aan. Zodra ik thuis ben zal ik wel een wat uitgebreider verslag typen, dus ik hou het nou ff kort. Sardines My girlfriend (Mon) and I arrived in Newark, New Jersey. I was there for a wedding, but she and I wanted to see New York. So we took a train to Manhattan, and stayed in a sardine can... err hotel. We stayed at the Washington Jefferson on 51 St. in Manhattan. The hotel was so tiny, it's not even funny. The room we stayed in (and this includes the bathroom) is like the size of a regular walk-in closet. Air train Newark International Airport. That's the first US airport I've seen besides LAX. Thursday, September 2nd was supposed to be the last, big day for protests in the street, but with a thousand or more people still sitting in police detention at Pier 57, there seemed to be less outright animosity. Wednesday, September 1st was a day of recovery for many of the activists who had descended upon Manhattan, and I suspect the NYPD was also a bit restive. After spending twelve hours on the streets photographing in 90 degree heat, I had no energy to get up six hours later to photograph the "pink slip line" that was scheduled to wrap around Madison Square Garden at 8 AM, symbolically representing the millions of people who have lost their jobs during the Bush administration. After the Man in Black Bloc at Sotheby's auction house, I headed downtown to the 42nd Street Library at Bryant Park, (site of library lions made infamous (to me) in "Ghostbusters").
