OK--Say that 5 times fast: Unique New York, Unique New York, Newique Yew York, Nuyeek New Nork, etc... Try it out loud right now and you'll see what I mean.
I suppose that every little city or town has some unique aspect to it, some feature or other that sets it apart and perhaps helps define it. Mine certainly does--doesn't yours? Well, if that is so, then in a city of THIS size one must anticipate a LOT of such uniquenesses.
I've chose to end this section of the blog (Entry #51!) with a photo survey of some of the features I noticed during my time here that seemed different from what I was used to, either in quality or in quantity; a difference in kind or a difference in degree. For instance--how New York pedestrians, facing a red light, walk out into the street as if challenging cars having the right of way, matador-like. Or, have you ever gone into a store and seen a kimono worth a quarter of a million dollars for sale? Does your city have grates in the sidewalk that open for access to store cellars? How about a 3-story tall
balloon of Spider man? External fire escapes on many buildings? Do parents stand outdoors, inside a fenced-in cage 40 feet high (OK, it's really an outdoor basketball court), waiting for their youngsters to get out of school? Ever been in the presence of millions of M&Ms? Have you gazed upon 'Christina's World'?
As for the photos themselves, I DO HOPE you take the time to look at them in the LARGE version.
I will be returning to this wonderful city in 2009 and can't WAIT for the chance to experience it again.
May all your travels be awe-inspiring,
Dan
