We finally booked our round the world ticket yesterday! We're so excited to be starting our year-long journey :)
We've been going back and forth with US Airways' RTW booking department for days, trying to find ways to fit in Fiji en route to Auckland and a second stop in Latin America (Chile). Once we set the itinerary with their dedicated RTW booking department (via email), we were directed to the US Airways' general reservation line. We ended up calling several times and speaking to at least 4 different reps! Their sales reps aren't very familiar with the Star Alliance RTW ticket process (probably since these trips are still relatively uncommon in the US... some of the agents actually seemed amazed that a RTW trip was possible). We ended up getting paper tickets (bummer... we'll have to be super careful not to lose them) since they said they can't apply e-tickets to flights with certain partner airlines.
Here's our rough itinerary-- the dates are somewhat flexible so this is just a guide:
* 24 JUN- We're kicking off the trip with one night in San Francisco (and most of the following day)
* 25 JUN- San Francisco to Auckland, NZ
* 27 JUN- Arrive in Auckland and immediately fly to Fiji (strange-- they didn't have a direct flight to Fiji available, so we are actually stopping in Auckland before and after Fiji)
* 10 JUL- Fiji to Auckland
* 31 JUL- Auckland to Sydney, Australia
(Overland to Brisbane. We plan on going to Cairns and other coastal areas)
* 02 OCT- Brisbane to Singapore
* 06 OCT- Singapore to Bangkok, Thailand
(We plan on using Thailand as a base for travel throughout SE Asia... including Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, etc)
* 11 JAN- Bangkok to Johannesburg (via a stopover in Mumbai)
* 02 FEB- Johannesburg to Sao Paolo, Brazil
(We plan on traveling around Brazil and will be in Rio de Janeiro for Carnival)
* 26 MAR- Sao Paolo to Santiago, Chile
(We will travel from Santiago to Peru, and will go to Buenos Aires either through Brazil or Chile)
* TBD- Santiago to Toronto, Canada (not our first choice of stopover, but it will do!)
* TBD- Toronto to NYC... Home!!!
