Hello once again!
No, it is not really February 15th, but I'm trying to keep things in order...
Yes, it IS Easter and I'm back in Vancouver about to color/docorate Easter eggs as soon as I complete this entry. As promised, I will be writing of our further adventures in Manhattan in the coming week: to tell, as Paul Harvey used to say, "the REST of the story."
As this is a time when we celebrate renewal, rebirth, and hope for the future I thought I would include some images I took at the United Nations on one of our last days in NYC. Religious holidays are good times to think of peace (not that there's a "bad" time for it) and the photos are from a lobby display of cartoons intended to promote tolerance and understanding. They are part of an international competition held every year in Turkey by the Aydin Dogan Foundation (www.adindoganvakfi.ory.tr) that draws thousands of submissions from over one hundred countries. Each entry is simply a single-frame visual devoid of words, but which gives collective meaning to the phrase "Visualize World Peace."
(Well...now that I'm looking at a mock-up
of this entry, it's pretty clear that these are fairly in-your-face cartoons that are better characterized as "anti-war" than they are "promoting tolerance and understanding"--there's nothing tolerant or passive about them. I can live with that. All the same, my intention wasn't to mix blood red images with a Happy Easter message (I mean, I'm not Mel). Writing a photo/travel blog is more complex than I imagined, eh?)
Still, the point is: May Peace be with you. Happy Easter,
Dan

Those are powerful images Dan! Do you know how long that exhibition is runnung?
Love image #9... has all the elements of a good political cartoon... subtle, clever, and true.
And I might add... love YOUR shot of Manhattan in the previous.
