We start the day with a quick cruise through downtown Taos. Starting early, when there is little traffic it takes about 3 minutes. Later when the rest of the tourists are awake, this could take 20 minutes. It’s a little alarming what the traffic through Taos is like. Our destination is the Enchanted Circle. This loop circles the great mountains around Taos and takes you through Angel Fire and Red River at the northernmost tip. High country that is dark and cloudy and cool. For a Tucsonan, this is like heaven. We, however, travel at our own pace. When we see a sign for DH Lawrence’s cabin, we take that right turn onto the dirt road. Several miles in we find the ranch and frankly it’s kind of giving it the high hat treatment to call ... read more

A whole nuther world. Apparently, whole nuther worlds visit here. There are even cow crossing signs with flying saucers. Too funny. I'll grab a pic of one tomorrow. Uncle Stone pointed them out. Seems New Mexicans like to call you boss, too. The guy at the store kept calling Paul boss. Ben said the rafting guy called him boss too. But we all know who the boss really is. I'm the boss!In the morning, we drove over to the Indian Pueblos. They have been dwelling there for over a 1000 years in these structures. It was neat to walk through the village. Many of them have little ... read more

I wanted to do something here in New Mexico that seemed to fit the area. We traveled up into the Carson National Forest mountains and met a man named Stuart with his 7 beautiful Llamas. We had lunch with the Llamas. We hiked up the mountains with the Llamas carrying our stuff. Everyone loved the Llamas. They are so cute. Stuart, the guide, is a pure lover of nature, the outdoors and his Llamas. He saves abandoned and abused Llamas. He is super knowledgable about the mountains and the flora and fauna. We ate all kinds of leaves and berries along the trail. When we got to a river, we let our llamas ... read more

Geo: 36.4072, -105.57380 degrees and sunny7.010 feet above sea level (Troy is 678 ft)Great views. Beautiful weather. Enya playing (seemed appropriate). I haven't listened to it in years. It was so nice to wake up at leisure and have my coffee with quiet mountain views. It rained a little last night. Paul and I stepped outside and there was this amazing smell. I am not sure if its the sage brush or this other plant they say opens it's pores to take in the rain and releases this amazing smell. Imagine stepping into one of those little shops that are filled with lavender and spice only this is a smell all around mixed with a fresh mountain air. It smells so good. You want to bottle it up. This morning we just vegged. Layed like broccoli. ... read more

We boogied out early to go to the Cheyenne zoo on the mountain side. Pretty unique...and tiring. The zoo is built into the side of the mountain so you have to climb hills to get to different vantage points and exhibits. I was still feeling light headed and climbing doesn't help your oxygen intake. Paul's hiccups never came back. This zoo lets you really get up close to the animals. The kids liked it. The giraffe's are always cool and these were super friendly. Or hungry. We love the Battlecreek Zoo for the African Encounter where you can feed the giraffes. This was similar in that you were free to hang ... read more

September 24 -25 Our first visit to Ojo Caliente was in 2008, a time when they were renovating the spa and its historic hotel. We are glad to have been able to return this year but after we arrived we thought, “why did we wait so long to come back?”. Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs and Spa is located about 45 minutes west of Taos where we also stayed in 2008. This year we made Ojo Caliente our prime destination and although we did leave one day for lunch in Chimayo we stayed at the spa in the historic hotel, totally relaxed, soaking and resting for several days and nights. The hotel was peaceful and quiet but I heard people saying that the North Cottages were noisy in the morning when early workers rode by in their ... read more

We celebrated our 3rd anniversary of consecutive travel in the small Baja California town of Playas de Rosarito, Mexico. Our life was beginning to remind us of an extended episode of Amazing Race. We could hear Phil making his speech to us as we reached the mat at the end of the race. (Three years, 16 countries, 3 continents, 65,000 miles and untold number of beds, you are the winners of the Amazing Race….). We were tired and needed a nice place to rest up for a while. We had visited Rosarito before our Europe trip and had liked it. Rosarito is 20 miles south of the US border at Tijuana and has virtually the same beaches and weather as San Diego for less than half the price. The weather is nearly perfect all year round, ... read more

August 24 – Sunday – Morning - This morning after having my banana and peanut butter sandwiches for breakfast I made sure the reservoir for my radiator was full as well as the radiator full, and headed off over the top of the mesa. I had no problem getting up and over the mesa and then back down again, on Hwy567 to where it veered off towards Carson. At this point I continued on straight to where the road connected with Hwy 64 near the rest area at the Rio Grande Gorge bridge. I invested an hour of so checking out the canyon from the Rest Area and the overlook in the middle of the bridge. Quite awesome. Note: From my campground I could have just went back on 570 to Pilar and then taken Hwy ... read more

Geo: 36.4072, -105.573Still had not decided what to do for our anniversary when we awakened on anniversary morning. Then......................let's go to Taos. Fixed a mercola smoothie, gathered up a few things and off we went to Taos.As we were driving along the river it began to snow all the way to Taos. Decided to have brunch at the Old Martina Inn. What a delightful place. They gave us a glass of champagne to help us celebrate our anniversary. Had a spicy Eggs Benedict that was so very delicious. From there to Casa Benevides where we had a beautiful room awaiting us. Rested a bit before heading out to look around town. We were still trying to decide where to have dinner and were walking around checking places out and it was very slippery with the ice patches ... read more

Reflections on our recent visit to Taos, New Mexico From Santa Fe we travelled, on the advice from Roy in Albuequerque, on the ‘High Road’ to Taos (ie 84/285 to 503 to 76 to 518. This is a magnificently scenic route through more mountain vistas and endless meadows of the Nambe and through the area known as the Badlands. The landscape of the Badlands looks as though it was shaped by fierce winds and rains, coloured pink and orange and mauve, and was a source of constant inspiration to Georgia O’Keefe. There are small farms and apple orchards as well as dramatic pink limestone outcroppings. The entire road is a gradual and continual ascent and Rudy V took it at his usual slow and steady pace. Taos is a small city of some 6000 persons. It ... read more
