Gracie and I awoke to a gorgeous warm day and rented a car. We drove to Durham, NH to see roller derby: Rochester NY's Roc Stars vs New Hampshire’s Skate Free or Die. Brianne skates for the Roc Stars, and this would be the first bout I’d see her in. Her skating name is Harriet Beecher Ass, but she’s known to teammates as Beecher. (Her son Kiernan’s “skater” name is Son of a Beecher.) Gracie navigated well, and even sang some of my favorite songs, so the trip went quickly, and we made it to the UNH campus arena in plenty of time. The bout was exciting and frustrating to watch. I was impressed at Brianne’s nerve and physicality; I see how growing up with older brothers prepared her for this sport. I flinched ... read more

Weather permitting, we will head back to Phoenix this Thursday, January 13, to rejoin our RV and tow car. Our itinerary is very fluid, but we will generally be heading east and staying south for the warmth. We'll resume the weekly blogs and perhaps will even figure out how to incorporate the photos into the blogs.... read more

Thanks to John for figuring out how to upload photos. This set has samples from our trip through Salt Lake City. I goofed and published the later photos first, but really Ottawa was our first major visit. (img_src) ... read more

THE BASICS We arrived home on Oct. 27, and it just occurred to me that I had not sent a final blah-blah-blog. We spent five days in Phoenix preparing Harvey the RV for its respite from us, and visiting with my brother and his wife. It has been nice to be back in NH while some of the leaves are still crimson. THE FLUFF A quick-witted friend quipped when we said we had left the RV in Phoenix that maybe we should consult a professional about memory loss, because that it is a pretty big thing to forget. It wasn't a whole lot of fun prepping Harvey. We had lots of checklists, and of course forgot some of the things we should have brought home. We did about a B+ job, but it was annoying. Harvey ... read more

A wise man once told me that to pack for a backpacking trip, "you must place all that you think you require on the floor and then take about half away in order to be able to fit everything." Alright, perhaps this was just my friend Tosha, and at the time I chose to nod my head in agreement while secretly doubting his wisdom. Surely, I thought, this was a drastic overstatement. As I have spent the last few days packing, or more precisely, begrudgingly removing my cherished travel "necessities", I feel it only adequate to admit my ignorance within this public forum and concede defeat. I suppose my downfall derives from being a teacher. We all like to search out a variety of sources in order to cross-reference to gain greater understanding. I took ... read more

I wrote the following thoughts back in early March. It is now early April, and we came home on March 30. Since then we’ve had a wonderful visit with Deborah and her kids and dog, have raked and raked in our yard during an unusual spell of warm sunny weather, and John has labored to put the RV in shape. I’ll tag a few additional reflections at the end of this. March 3 We have a relatively calm period here in Florida, and continue to be thoroughly grateful to be here. Some observations: 1. RV folks almost pounce on us to be helpful and friendly. The prime example occurred when we pulled into an RV park, went inside to register, came back out to restart the RV - and it would not start. Within about five ... read more

John added the title "Travels with Charley" and the derivation of that title is kinda cute. Charley is not a dog, as I would wish. Or even a cat or a goldfish. Charley is an abbreviation of Charlestown, the graduated care community where John's mother spent her last few years. He figures this motorhome is our graduated care community...... read more

Well, we thought we had had our full share of adventures on this trip. Wrong. On January 20, as we slowly got ready, we noticed that one of the rear tires looked a bit flat. So we drove to a gas station to fill it with air. Of course they could not accommodate anything that big. So they sent us to an RV dealer fairly closeby. In we drove. They told us they didn't do tires, that we should go to Savannah Tire. So out we attempted to drive - yes, you guessed it, there was no exit on the other side of the building. So off came the Toyota (which incidentally might be on the latest recall list). John is getting very talented at backing the RV. At Savannah Tire, the mechanic removed the tire. ... read more

(While we are having a wonderful time with this new adventure, our hearts are heavy about the tragedies in Haiti and elsewhere. How lucky we are to have such silly problems while others suffer so deeply.) We got the car hooked to the rear of the motorhome and left Durham at 8:25 AM on Friday, January 15. We are now (Tuesday, January 19) at an RV park a few miles west of Savannah, looking forward to taking the car in to spend time in that glorious city. We can't walk as much as we'd like, because of Linda's healing broken ankle. But we will surely enjoy our time there. We have learned quite a few things along the way... - Day 1, as we passed Baltimore, we drove through a tunnel marked "Maximum 5 tons gvw." ... read more
