What happens in Vegas.... 4/08/09 Time for another 5am bus - waheeey. We marched up State Street for the last time, backpacks digging into slightly sunburnt shoulders (delightful). We had to change buses at LA, and Claire and I sat together at the back of the first bus behind probably the most smelly man I've ever encountered. He kept manically twitching and scratching his head, and flakes of skin were flying off everywhere. It was really very unpleasant, especially at that time of the morning! Claire spent the 3 hour bus journey sniffing her hand which smelt of her Pink Victoria [View Full Entry]

We decided to try some two lane highways instead of the usual interstates, mainly the 90 and the 80, when traveling from Billings MT to Novato CA and back. We headed out west on the 90 just to get a running start, then down Hwy 191 through the Gallatin Canyon to West Yellowstone, famous for its wide streets, the better to push the snow around in the winter. Hwy 20 out of West connects you with the 15 and either 84 or 86 in Idaho, probably a little of both, just to get to Twin Falls, which if you don't start [View Full Entry]

The rest of my night tracking was actually kinda exciting! One night a bat flew right past me! I was thrilled. Obviously. :) Then a pretty uncool thing happened, although it all turned out okay. During thursday's shift, I thought that one of my tortoises was dead. Which was odd because it had been fine 24hours early. But when I tracked to it on thursday it was flipped over. I assumed that since it was on its back and not moving at all, that it was dead. I couldn't get ahold of Sarah on the radio and so I wasn't sure [View Full Entry]

So the hubs was sent to Vegas for a week to present at National Association of Broadcasters. I wasn't able to actually see him in action, but, I was told he got to wear a headset like that Sham Wow guy. Because I was finishing up my semester, I could not take too much time off, so I just made the trip a long weekend. What I expected before going: Prime examples of the deterioration of America. I expected the city to be dirty and out of control, littered with prostitutes and drunk frat boys. I expected to go ape at [View Full Entry]

During our stay in Vegas, we decided to rent a car and drive to see the surrounding areas. We chose to go to Red Rock Canyon, because it was close. It is about a half hour drive, and it was spectacular. Going to Vegas was my first trip out west in the 48, and I did not expect that there would be beautiful desert landscape nearby. Red Rock Canyon was terrific, just bring plenty of water if you go. On our way back to the city, we detoured to the Hoover Dam (which wasn't too far away from Red Rock Canyon [View Full Entry]

The rest of last week was spent in Barstow. I actually had to stay until Friday. Think they are kinda running out of things for us to do sometimes. Anyway, it wasn't too bad. Having the dog made it totally ok. :) We were basically finished on Wednesday but Thursday morning we all went out to plot 5 and spent nearly 2 hours looking for a missing tortoise. No luck this time though. Sad. :( Then Felicia Angela and I headed over to do plot 3. After that we were done for the day! Back at the house I just did [View Full Entry]

July 2th & 28th San Francisco to Las Vegas On the road again. As usual ,we got a late start and it took us longer than we expected to reach our destination. We finally made it to Las Vegas, NV! Did you know that there is a KOA campground right on the strip at the Circus Circus Casino? Neither did we but we found it and there we were parking our RV on the Las Vegas strip! Bizarre! We hooked everything up and then went to check out the town. It is hot here! We were freezing last night in San [View Full Entry]

"Lake Tahoe is one of the few places on earth where people feel an emotional response just by looking at it. Yosemite Valley, the giant sequoias, the Grand Canyon, a perfect sunset on the Pacific Ocean ... these are a few other sights that occasionally can evoke the same response. But Tahoe often seems to strike the deepest chord." - Tom Stienstra, a guide to MOON Tahoe Camping & Hiking We came across this passage en route to Tahoe, driving Hwy 5 from Crater Lake. What we found startling in it was that not only did it list every destination in [View Full Entry]

On thursday morning last week we went out looking for one of the lost tortoises, that had been missing since march. We weren't expecting anything because, well, they have been looking for all lost tortoises for a while with no luck. So yeah. Emily and Erin and I are walking along, heading to where the tortoise was last seen, when Erin cries out, "I FOUND A TORTOISE!" we thought she was kidding. Until we realized she wasn't. There he was, 3238, sitting on the ground, a few feet outside of a burrow. And not just any burrow. The burrow that he [View Full Entry]
