Blogs from West Wendover, Nevada, United States, North America
since our last entry, we' ve been experiencing bad internet connections at campgrounds. We left South Dakota and drove to Wendover NV. This seemed to be the longest drive yet, even though it wasn't. We drove at least 120+ miles across the Bonneville Salt Flats to Wendover. Flat, straight, dead, nothing to see, windy road. I'm glad we did it. The salt flats are beautiful, it looks like snow. All along the interstate people have taken rocks on the sides of the road along with beer bottles and written words and pictures. Looked neet as we passed by. Fortunitely when we reached the end of the flats, Wendover was at the base of the mountain and our campground was right there. This was just a overnight stop. Very nice KOA, we basically had the place to ... read more
On The Road, to Salt Lake City.
After leaving the hotel this morning we had a 3-minute cab ride to the Amtrak station in Emeryville, CA. As I stated in an earlier entry, Emeryville is the farthest Amtrak goes. From there, there’s a $6 bus connection that continues across the bay into the heart of San Francisco if that’s where you’re heading. To keep things simpler, we avoided having the bus ride by just staying in Emeryville prior to our departure. Check-in and one cup of chai tea later we were homeward bound! The number 6 California Zephyr left Emeryville at 9:15 this morning headed for Chicago. The scheduled arrival is Tuesday afternoon though since things always run behind, we’ve no idea when we’ll actually be there. Our connecting train to Cincinnati leaves 2hrs 45min after our scheduled arrival in Chicago so we’re ... read more
The states phase 2: salt lake city to San fransisco
Published: November 6th 2006North America » United States » Nevada » West WendoverHello again everyone. I will now update you with stage 2 of the states road trip which took us from Salt lake city (Mormen HQ) to san fransico, driving straight across nevada, all 2000 km of it!!!!! So after yellowstone national park, and the near death experiences we felt we needed a bit of peace and tranquility, so headed to Salt lake city, the head quaters for the mormens. Now they are interesting people, especially when they take it upon themselve to give you a tour of their church, and try to convert you with singing. As you can imagine, seeing two young girls dressed in school shoes, tights and long trench coats singing praises too you out of tune tends to make you laugh. And that is what we did. It was uncontrolable and me ... read more
Cait: Today was a day of contrasts. Our trip has, so far, allowed us to see and experience many of the dramatic differences in lifestyle all contained within our country. The ticking of the odometer however, has provided an ease of transition between these lifestyle segments, whether it be in mile-markers passed by on an interstate or mountains climbed in-between. Today however, was different. To wake up in the Mormon capitol of the world and retire to sleep 14 hours later in a glitzy hotel-casino is certainly something the mind struggles to understand….particularly when both of these lifestyles are ones that you personally avoid. Thankfully, for me, much of the afternoon in-between was spent in the beautiful outdoors, where, as those of you who know me, understand that I feel most comfortable. After sleeping in (comparatively) ... read more
