(Disclaimer: My narrative includes certainly elements best categorized as historical fiction. They may use terms that are not necessarily politically correct. Please accept them as necessary verisimilitude.) Our day started with a tour of the Ft. Leavenworth Frontier Army Museum. The collection consists mostly of various preserved frontier Army transportation vehicles, although it also includes uniforms and other Army paraphernalia. There are several larger weapons, such as gatling guns and howitzers. The fort here was established as a cantonment for troops under Col. Henry Leavenworth. Located on the (Kansas) side of the Missouri, the landing where a ferry was established became the unofficial jumping off point for the California Trail, the Santa Fe Trail, and the Oregon Trail. The fort was instrumental in securing the West for the westward expansion of the young United States. Later,... read more

Kind of like when you are moving to a new house. Except, our new (but temporary) home has four wheels, captain chairs with Sparty printed on the headrests and a 26 inch tv. We raced to grab a pizza (cheese pizza of course-Lent) on the way to pick the kids up at school. I had ... read more

Jason: We finally began our journey to Oregon and Amy could not be worse. She’s been whining ever since we left the house. She says that she’ll miss her friend Elisa’s birthday, that she won’t be able to talk to her friends for months, and she’ll miss out on a lot. She keeps whining about the wagon being uncomfortable and she wishes that we’ll stop to places with wifi. This is going to be a long ride.... read more

This will be a relatively short post as our recent trip to Omaha was just a short one to visit the zoo. However, I’ll post plenty of photos which will probably show what we did better than I can describe it. As I mentioned, there was really only one reason that took us to Omaha – it’s zoo. It has a reputation for being the best in the world which is a massive call for a zoo that sits in pretty much in the middle of nowhere. However, we’d heard nothing but good stories about it, and it’s only just over two hours drive away so decided to head up for the weekend. We made the short drive up and checked into the hotel before ducking into Omaha to explore. The first thing that struck us ... read more

Are you sick of me talking about the heat? The day we arrived in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the thermometer in our car registered 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43.3 degrees Celsius)! - of course, that was in a parking lot, after the car had sat for a bit (the store, Camping World, let us bring the puppies into the store with us), but that's HOT!!! We were tired. We were sick of the heat. We were on our way home and wishing we were already there. (Now, as I write this, it's winter, and it's cold & snowing, and I can't remember what I was complaining about in the summer...no...I remember ... I love summer, but I'm like Goldilocks - "too hot, too cold, just right".) Last time we were in Nebraska, we were on a one way ... read more

We got an early start from Joliet and were optimistic that we were going to have a good day riding, it was a little cool, but not cold, and not a cloud in the sky. The weather report said that the temperature along out route would be in the mid to high 70’s – perfect riding weather. After we got on the highway we discovered what the weather report didn’t tell us – it was really, really windy – horrible conditions for riding. There weren’t as many trucks as there were near Chicago, but there were enough to be a real nuisance. We tucked in our elbows, ducked our heads and continued on, stopping more frequently than we had on the previous days. As we moved across Iowa, the scenery became more beautiful, which made the ... read more

We set out early for Omaha. We expected the two hour drive to take us four hours, but the kids surprised us by sleeping the whole way. I called Julie at 9am to let her know we'd arrived two hours ahead of schedule. While she got up for the day, we decided to find a breakfast place near her home and stopped at Lisa's Radial Cafe. The atmosphere was relaxed and casual, which kept the kids at ease and happy. The waitress even let Jo have a lamenated menu to chomp on. I ordered a bowl of oatmeal; it was the good stuff--thick and slowly cooked. I doctored it up with a bit of brown sugar, raisins, and milk. Andrew ordered a veggie skillet that was very good but a bit greasy. Oliver devoured the spinach ... read more
