Day 9 - Homemade Pie !!
Published: June 16th 2008North America » United States » Montana » Glacier National ParkHappy Father's Day Daddy and Daddy Jack !!! and Happy Birthday Hunter and Anthony !!! I love you millions !!! Let me start by saying it was really really cold last night and somehow Tim and I ended up on the pull out couch while Kayla & Emily slept very comfortably in our king sized bed !! We were so excited about Glacier National Park and Canada today we got up around 9:00 a.m. and started preparing for the day. The girls and I gathered our buckets and headed downhill to the showers for our daily ritual. Let’s hope that no one ends up on the floor today! The three of us are all out of the shower and getting ready. Emily and I are brushing our teeth as Kayla is blow-drying her hair. All of ... read more
Day 8 - Flat on My Butt !!
Published: June 16th 2008North America » United States » Montana » Glacier National ParkWe awoke this morning in West Yellowstone, Montana at the local KOA camp ground after a descent's night sleep. We knew we had a very long drive ahead of us so we got off to a pretty early start (around 8:30). Emily, Kayla and I grab our little shower buckets and head off to the showers while Tim decides he's going to try out the shower in the motor home today. You know that the girls always take way longer than me, so I'm finishing up my shower and getting ready to step out of the shower into the attached dressing area while they are still showering a few stalls down. I'm drying off, putting my powder on and trying to get dressed in this itsy bitsy tiny space that has this little mat thing in ... read more
Day 7 - Yellowstone Here We Come !
Published: June 15th 2008North America » United States » Montana » West YellowstoneWell, it's been a week now and I can't believe how incredible this trip has been so far. We have already seen and done so much stuff that I can't even fathom what's to come. I got up early this morning and the first thing I did after I got ready was step out the door and into Wal-Mart to shop for some warm clothes. Tim didn't pack a single long sleeve shirt and you know good and well he didn't have a jacket with him. I already had to buy a hideous orange hoodie at the KOA in Mt. Rushmore because it was so cold there and I didn't have anything warm to wear. Wal-Mart didn't have a single long sleeve shirt, no jackets and not even a sweatshirt for sale. The sales lady ... read more
(Billings, Montana) It was different leaving Ness Lake knowing we wouldn't be on another project for several months. Leaving the other couples is always hard, but this one especially so, because we aren't scheduled to work with any of them until April, when we meet up with Henry and Annie again. Weird feeling. We arrived in Billings two weeks ago, after an eventful trip. Eventful trips aren’t always fun…this one had its times of both. We left Prince George in the rain, we drove in the rain, we did rv repairs in the rain….get the picture?! Now I know rain is a good thing. I know that. It’s a good thing.... Anyway, here’s a glimpse of the trip home. While driving through the mountains we saw three moose (moosi?!), four black bears, one grizzly, several elk ... read more
On the bright side, I'm not homesick...
Published: June 7th 2008North America » United States » Montana » Glacier National ParkIt seems I'm being pulled in a different direction. Due to extenuating circumstances, I am feeling like this isn't where I need to be. Other things are in the works. I'll keep you all posted...... read more

It's already June! Time is flying...in general, not so much here. It's raining again. I'm missing everyone. I wish everyone was here more than I wish I was home. It's starting to feel like summer camp. Lots of drama in tow. Was not expecting that. I think if there was one thing that would bring me home early, it would be escalated drama. There are a lot of people younger than me. That never happens. I don't recall being than stupid. My roommate is coming on the 17th. joy... I'm slowly acquiring all kinds of burns and cuts all over my hands from cooking. ouch. we filter the fryer oil every night. who does that? crazy... more later.... read more
And so it begins...
Published: May 29th 2008North America » United States » Montana » Glacier National ParkSo Bill left yesterday...vacation over. I am officially here and working. Working hard. I'm a breakfast cook so normal day I'm up at 530. For those of you who don't know me, getting up that early is ludacris. The owner, my boss, is so incredibly anal and OCD. She trained me to do prep work and spent 20 min showing me how to take out the trash. Painful. I'm sure once I get into the swing and she backs out of the equation, things will be easier. The restaurant opened yesterday and I was cooking. I loved it! I can alreadly tell I'm going to run the kitchen... I'm starting to warm up to the staff, but everyone is so familiar to me. I know them all from somewhere, I swear. I see qualities and quirks ... read more
For over 30 years management biologists have been annually surveying elk herds during the spring from fixed-wing aircraft in west-central Montana. Observers record the ratio of cow elk to calf elk to measure the productivity of the elk herd, i.e., high calf:cow ratios equate to a productive, growing elk herd. Since the late 1980s biologists have observed a progressive decline in the annual production of elk calves. My research empirically tested 3 hypotheses in an attempt to understand this trend: A) calf declines are the result of nutritional deficiencies resulting from high elk densities and/or changing habitat conditions; B) calf declines are the result of predation resulting from an increase in the abundance and distribution of a suite of predators; C) calf declines are the result of an aberrantly low proportion of mature bulls within herds ... read more
May 27th -- Missoula Day 2: Some Ascents While Waiting for Clearing
Published: May 30th 2008North America » United States » Montana » MissoulaEditor Note For those of you who can't wait: as you probably know thanks to relay from Anne, we landed safely in mid-afternoon at Black Hills airport in South Dakota. Account of today -- which has three minutes left in it in our time zone -- and yesterday are pending as soon as we can get to them. I had this text finished last night, but it takes another half hour to upload and annotate pictures, and it was after midnight when I got that much done. In case you're wondering what's so hard about writing a blog entry when we only seem to fly less than four hours most days...so much of the average day is spent figuring out whether or not we're going to fly. That's Job One, and so bashing away at the ... read more
