Blog from Rachel: We got up early and left Glacier for our 7 hour drive to Yellowstone. We broke up the trip by stopping in the city of Missoula to visit the University of Montana, home of the fighting grizzlie bears…the 1995 and 2001 division 1-AA champions in football. We all got Montana Griz sweatshirts…… except for dad!!!!!! He regrets his decision greatly. It’s a very nice campus except for the fact that it is haunted. I bought a book about Montana ghost stories and many of them take place on the University of Montana campus. There are many rooms and [View Full Entry]

Today we were able to take advantage of the park buses to drive to Logan Pass so we could hike from the pass to Hidden Lake. Not having to drive on Going to the Sun Road with the construction was very welcomed. With water and sweatshirts we ventured up to Logan Pass. It was a good thing Amy reminded the girls to take their sweatshirts since there were still acres of snow several feet thick in most areas of the hike. It is amazing how some people dress to go for a hike in the snow (incredible since it is July), [View Full Entry]

Entering Glacier National Park
Little did I realize what was before me!
Hi everyone, Just when you think you have seen all there is to see in scenery and wild motorcycle riding, along comes Glacier National Park! It was not disappointing to say the least. As my title suggests, it was breath-taking, spectacular, inspiring, nerve-wracking, and at times I was questioning my reason for taking the Glacier National Park "Going To The Sun" road. I will get to that in a minute, but first the preliminaries. I spent the night outside of Spokane, Washington and decided to get an early start on the ride to Glacier. First stop was Sandpoint, Idaho. Nestled at [View Full Entry]

Avalanche Lake hike, What we thought was going to be a short hike, turned into an all day affair. Our hike stared at the trail of the red cedars, then we decided to go on to Avalanche Lake. It was a great hike through the woods and we were able to see so great views of the Rockies. The hike took longer than expected due to the girls stopping and playing in the water, but who could blame them. The hike to the lake is about 2.3 miles each way. To keep us entertained “Steve Erchle” (Emma) was pointing out various [View Full Entry]

Because we haven't been in a car enough yet, we decided to pay extra for a day long tour with the old people! Actually, it was a great day...we got to see so much of the park, and Shawn didn't have to drive! We traveled in a 1936 open roofed 17 passenger bus. It gave us incredible views of the mountains. The tour went across Going to the Sun Road, which is truly the most beautiful thing we've ever seen. The driver gave us facts along the way, and we got to "pop up" (aka stick our head out of the [View Full Entry]

We made it!! We got here at about 2:00 on Saturday. It is absolutely amazing. Our campground is very nice, with a view of the mountains right from our site. We've had some trouble with our internet connection, so we're a little behind posting. We are about 3 miles from the West enterance to Glacier National Park. We went to the park for a quick hike around McDonald Lake, which was beautiful. The weather is perfect so far... in the 80s during the day with no humidity. Nothing but blue skies. [View Full Entry]

We got a call from the dealership at 8:45 am that our car was done! We were quite excited, because they initially told us it wouldn't be done until 2:00. The service manager and technicians were great...if you are ever in Fargo with a Chevy problem, we highly recommend Gateway Chevrolet! Today was nothing but driving. We discovered shortly after leaving Fargo that we were very lucky it broke down where it did. There is very little in North Dakota and NOTHING in Montana. In North Dakota, we stopped at the Painted Canyon (Theodore Roosevelt Park). It was very impressive. In [View Full Entry]

Painted Canyon 2

After having a blast at the family reunion, we left Flat Head Lake on Monday and headed towards Glacier National Park in northern Montana with Bird and Bob and the Tabor family (Patty's sister). We traveled on the "highway to the sun" (which just opened a few weeks ago because of snow) through the park and we stopped at Logan Pass for a hike. The hike was 90% on the snow and we saw some great wildlife (see pics). We spent the last three nights at Many Glacier Hotel in the heart of Glacier National park. The hotel is only open [View Full Entry]

Great Falls
Great Falls
The 5 natural falls are now being used for hydroelectricity. This is one of them.
We made the trip up to Great Falls from Grand Teton. We planned this so we did not have to spend too much time in the car prior to getting to Glacier national Park. We were staying in a small cabin (shed) at a campsite just outside of Great Falls. Too far to walk for a beer so we had to bring it in along with a local delicacy (take away pizza). There was entertainment at the campsite - well two locals playing a selection of bluegrass and country songs. It was good in some areas and not so good in [View Full Entry]
