We're back at the Big Timber KOA. It's a long story. We're back to looking at listings again. It's a long story. We're back to figuring out our next move. It's a long story. And maybe I'll feel like telling these long stories at some point. But right now I don't. Right now I'm just tired and sad and confused and upset. So today, we'll mostly just hang out at the campground, in the wonderful shade of Site 62 near the creek, and work on our computers, and rest, and think, and talk, and ponder. Perhaps will stop in for a brief visit at the Greycliff Prairie Dog Town State Park, which is just a stone's throw from our campground. I could use some dog time, even of the prairie type. The attached photo is the ... read more

I'm sitting here in the shade at a concrete picnic table in a Kiwanis-operated free campground on the outskirts of Lewistown, which is the geographical center of Montana. The air is warm and dry, with a nice, cool breeze blowing across me. Behind me sits Empedocles, the Wonder Odyssey, in which Sally is lying down with her friend Shinzen, trying to get rid of a headache. To my left, just across a gravel drive, there's a hole in the ground about three inches in diameter. Every now and then a prairie dog peeks out at me. His name is Paul. He lives here, and he's wondering just what the hell it is I think I'm doing, driving over his home. We spent the night at Lewistown's historic Calvert Hotel, which specializes in fancy decor, failing to ... read more

Sally here. We are doing better. Tim has an amazing sense of humor and I'm very lucky to be on this awful journey with him because he makes me laugh quite a bit and it helps immensely. I hope I never forget the power and value of deeply laughing, especially at myself. And it helps also to laugh at Tim's funny writing and his crazy use of language. So I think, and I hope I am not tempting the gods by saying this, but I think the worst is over. I mentioned it to Tim this morning, that we are doing better and wondering why. He said "Maybe we're just getting used to it." Used to being temporarily homeless in these bizarro times in RV parks that have something????? who knows what, to do with "camping"? ... read more

July 16th 2026 According to the computer in the campground office, this is the 2183rd day of our Montana property hunt. That's almost six years we’ve been here, if my math is correct, though some people are certain that the aliens have messed with the timeline, and that it may be much longer than that. We're having to search farther and further afield, still looking for that perfect place to land. This morning we're heading north to look at a ranch in Fairbanks. Then later in the afternoon we've got a showing in Santa Fe. So another day with lots of driving. I hope we can find gas. The driving is slow going these days, even though the speed limits are now anything we want them to be. What with the quasi-civil war that’s been sputtering ... read more

Every day is a new study in letting go of control. Every day we must tell ourselves that we’re going to be okay, that everything is happening at the exact right time, that everything always works out in the end. We speak of our pains and disappointments and affronts, and then work to let them go, stripping them of the suffering which attaches to them, the suffering which tells us that they are personal, that they will never end, that they are a punishment for our multitude of crimes, that they are a sign that the Cosmos is an unfriendly place, and that we will never, ever have had a better past. We let go. And find the thing inside that lets us stop and take a breath and smile and reach out and grab the ... read more

Hey all. We had a nice afternoon and evening here at the Big Timber KOA. Pleasant temps. A constant breeze. The white noise background of cottonwood leaves blustering about in said breeze. The nearby and regular passings of freight trains. The distant hum of the motorway. All that. Sally cooked hot dogs on her twig stove. We had salad and chips and dogs, quintessential camping food. We eventually settled in for the night. With time to catch our breath on this cold Saturday morning, it seems wise to stop and assess the various rational™, logical™, think-infested "reasons" we have for even doing this Montana wild hack in the first place. As I said at the beginning, while part of this quest feels like answering a call, our minds have also searched for and gathered together some ... read more

Still here. It's just been... well... I guess I could complain. I could complain about the rain. About poor wifi or cell service. About how wrong our GPS sometimes gets things. About the lights in that campground and the stupid blue light on our window fan. About cramped tiny showers and cramped tiny restaurant booths and cramped tiny bathrooms and cramped tiny face masks. I could complain. All the little pains and inconveniences and surprises and unexpected events. It all seems so personal sometimes. As if the gods are messing with us. I could complain. And in real terms, it seems true to say that Montana has kicked our butts these past few days. Most people, when scoping out real estate, are looking for properties in a certain city or town. You know. Chapel Hill and ... read more

Things were going well. Then they got hard. Now they're okay, and looking up. Unless they're not. We left our campground in Medora and drove south into the badlands. It was two hours before our realtor appointment, but we knew it would be difficult to find the place, and wanted to see the area. We drove into the badlands. They were beautiful. We drove over cattle guards and amongst the cattle. We drove past oil derricks. We drove on paved roads, gravel roads, dirt roads, and what turned out to be a private drive. We never did find the house, but realized that there was no way we'd be interested in it. It was just too far out from too small of a town. So we high-tailed it back into town, to get enough cell service ... read more

What a great day! We didn't have to leave Fresno until 12:40pm. It was so nice no to have to get up in the middle of the night. Leisurely Lyft ride to the airport and lunch at the Fresno Airport. Nice way to start a vacation. Delta was on time as we headed out of Fresno. Usually I have an aisle seat so I don't see much but today was a window and we flew right over our home at Woodward Lakes. Then, over Millerton Lake just north about 10 miles from home. Quick jump over the Sierra Nevada range and there was Mammoth Lakes Ski Resort. Ahead to Mono Lake and 1 hour and 12 minutes later, into Salt Lake City. Just an hour layover then another hour and 6 minutes and the green valleys ... read more

We spent a few days recently visiting Glacier National Park and we were left speechless. We have visited many national parks but from a scenic perspective, this one has to be near the top. From the visitor centers to the McDonald Lodge to the Road-to-the-Sun drive, the views will leave you speechless. Just a note, if you are timid in the least and don’t like narrow winding roads with minimal clearance, you might want to leave the driving to the free shuttle bus or reserve a space in the red bus line that takes you through the park in a 1930’s vintage bus.... read more
