Planning this trip was a whirlwind; whether or not we were going anywhere was uncertain until about 3 weeks before today, but after quickly renewing Swathi's passport and booking some last-second flights, hotels, and campgrounds, we made it happen. The first leg of the journey was an early morning flight from Cleveland which landed at Glacier Park Airport (probably the smallest airport I've ever visited) in beautiful Kalispell, MT just before noon. Immediately, we headed to the local Walmart to stock up for the 6 nights of camping ahead of us. Just a few hours in Montana was enough to validate some stereotypes about rural Western America - we passed multiple trucks with the word "Jesus" or the Ten Commandments proudly displayed, and I counted at least four people, two of whom had young children with ... read more

Mileage 303.9 Today started out as usual, breakfast, pack the car and get on the road, except today was driving. I surely didn’t come close to my step goal today and I’ve been doubling it recently. We checked the fire map yesterday and it didn’t look good, but today it looked ok. We headed out and knew we would not be near civilization much till we got to Kalispell. At the turn off, we decided to get gas. Well, we see farm equipment at the pumps, then we pass a gas station with a silo as the main office. Ok, things you only see out west. We are now trying to do the state capitals whenever we are in a state, so we didn’t go thru Butte, but instead took the road into Helena. We got ... read more

... read more

The ride up to Kalispell was a bit long but very nice. It was a wonderful warm day. As we approach our destination we stopped for a few groceries before connecting with Hwy 35 around Flathead lake. it was a 40 mile ride up the east side of the lake and how awesome is the ride. The water in many places here is like the Caribbean, greenish blue and so clear you can see down and see the rock bottom like it is in your hands. We arrive at camp and enjoy a nice night and plan for the ride up into Glacier National Park in the morning. When we awake we see the storm rolling in the north where the park is so we decide to head south and do a Harley ride all the ... read more

Geo: 48.2016, -114.315When we planned this trip, the first thing on our agenda was to go back to Glacier National Park, because the last time we were there, the Going To The Sun Road was closed at Avalanche Pass. We had planned to drive from the west entry to the east exit on that road. So, our the plan for this trip, was to try again, only this time we were to going drive from east to west. This morning, when we were preparing to leave for that park, Fox News was reporting that fires had closed part of it. Further investigation indicated that the Going To The Sun Road was closed at Logan Pass and the east side of the park was closed. Our plans to drive across the park were sniffed out once again. ... read more

Geo: 48.2016, -114.315I hope I may be excused for my lack of enthusiasm today. I found it difficult to be inspired by northern Idaho and western Montana. It isn't that it's not beautiful country, because it is, but our route took us through no man's land…perhaps I should call it God's country…and how many ways can you describe pine trees? I think I have done it all several times, already. The first photo will show you that even Beamer got bored. And I have to say, compared to yesterday, being in the snow-covered mountains of Mt. Rainer National Park…well…this just didn't hit a home run for me. It reminded me of the Hainesville Woods in Maine, the one they wrote about in a song. I'm talking about Rt. 2 that starts in Idaho and goes on ... read more

Geo: 48.2016, -114.315 Our six month adventure begins with one really slow drive to Phoenix. Slow because we're sidetracking--instead of running straight south to Arizona we're heading southeast through a tip of Wyoming, then South Dakota, Iowa, & Illinois, then south through Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma & Texas, and finally directly west at San Antonio to skirt along the New Mexico/Mexico border until we can head north to Phoenix--where we park for 2 months. We drove through some really beautiful country, some of the most surprising to me was southeast Montana. Broadus, which was always a little too cowboy for even the cowboy country of Miles City as far as I was concerned, earned points for an adorable pink eatery you really shouldn't miss, should you ever find yourself nearby and hungry. Even a little bit hungry. ... read more
