I'm an intelligent womean, surely I c an figure this out!
The drive from Rapid City to Sioux Falls, SD was very interesting but long. We were amazed to see how much of the country is volcanic. The Yellowstone super-volcano comprises nearly all the park but its last eruption spewed ash, rocks and lava over many neighboring states. This was no surprise but to see how volcanic forces have been at worked underneath so much of the west was astounding. From the time we left Portland (where the Cascades are all volcanoes) to near Sioux Falls we were crossing terrain clearly disrupted by volcanic forces.

Making it to Sioux Falls just after dark, we were pleased to find our camp, a pretty KOA right off the interstate. Easy in, easy out.
Starting out early we hit the road for Kansas City. Lots more rolling farmland was the vista surrounding us most of the way. Probably the most interesting part of the drive (and the most annoying) was the road work underway on hundreds of miles of interstate due to the recent flooding. The much of the farmland we passed was still partially under water or so waterlogged it was unable to produce. Really sad and devastating for the farmers and the economy, I’m sure.

We made it to Kansas City before dark, a first for us this trip. We’re used to arriving in the dark and having to search for our camp sites in unfamiliar territory. Our park here was another pretty KOA, a presidential award winner, with a friendly staff. We settled in quickly for an early night, trying to get up earlier each day as we keep losing time as we head east. -Karen
