Nov 17 I am magnificently refreshed after a good nights sleep in the warm and dry motel and set off in very good spirits. My target today is Poplarville in Pearl River County, Mississippi. The road is reasonably good and there is hardly any wind so I jog along effortlessly and am nearly half way in no time. Of course thats when a flat comes along to bring you down to earth. On this occasion I am not bothered as the place it happens is a beautiful meadow with trees all around and I decide to do a bit of bike maintenence at the roadside, changing the rear tyre and lubing the chain. This done I go on to the half way mark, the town of Bogalusa, among the usual malls there is a gigantic Wallmart which has a bicycle department, I'm thinking of buying another spare tube, but of the 20 or so varieties of tubes none have presta valves which I need.
There is huge area devoted to hunting implements, guns, bows, crossbows and amo, deer hunting is popuar all over the south. This explains why all the petrol stations sell deer corn, you put that out and it
attracts the deer then you shoot them , simple really.
I get into Poplarville quite early and decide to cook macaroni and have a beer at the campsite, this does not work well as first of all Pearl River is a dry county, they had prohibition here before the rest of the USA and they never repealed it so you cant sell advertise or transport anything alcoholic here. Yesterday I could understand they dont sell booze in Franklinton on a Sunday but this blanket ban is hard to understand, apparently half the counties in mississipi are dry. The macaroni for the record did'nt work as the gas in the stove ran out before it could be cooked ha ha. Its another cold night but I am cheerful despite the setbacks.
