We've discovered there's quite the Paul Bunyan theme in this part of Minnesota! Earlier today, we decided to hike on the Paul Bunyan trail into town to find some lunch. There was a little drizzle, but not enough to put a damper on the walk. I was a little nervous about ticks, as I'd read that Lyme Disease is a problem in Minnesota. Thankfully, the Paul Bunyan Trail is wide and paved. When there was no one passing us, we stuck to the middle of the trail. With the trail and some bug spray, I felt pretty good about us avoiding ticks. When we reached the town, we found a little statue of Babe the Blue Ox. I was amused that the Paul Bunyan theme continued! Later, my grandma's cousin Kevin told me that there's supposed ... read more

Our resort is located on the shore of Lower Cullen Lake, and so we spent a good bit of time on the shore and out on the lake. Closest to the resort is a swim beach that is shallow and perfect for the kids. There is also a little stream that ran next to the beach, which leads down to Nisswa Lake. I guess if you take a small enough boat (perhaps a kayak?) you could head out to the other lake. However, the flow of the stream might make it hard to get back! We stuck to Lower Cullen Lake. The kayaks and paddle boards were free for us to use from the resort, and they also offer a pontoon rental for a fee. My mom wanted to take out the pontoon boat, and so ... read more

We left Des Moines at 7:30 this morning, and we hoped to arrive in Nisswa by 2pm. The plan was to surprise my mom for her birthday at 4pm. Google said the drive should take about 5 hours and 45 minutes, but it's hard to plan an arrival time when driving with kids. Thankfully, we beat rush hour in Minneapolis. My sister got stuck in traffic and sat on the freeway for more than an hour! We passed through the town Baxter, Minnesota around 2:30pm, which is located close to Nisswa. Baxter looked OK, kind of like a typical suburb. There was a Walmart, a Target, and a bunch of fast food restaurants. I worried that our resort was going to be suburban instead of the nice Minnesota getaway I'd imagined. But, as we got closer ... read more

We're home! Feels kind of strange, like we are half here and half there. The suitcases are empty, one of the last loads of clothes is in the washing machine, and the huge pile of mail has been sorted through. We've been to the grocery store and had to cook and cleanup after our meals for the first time in months. My tan hands are getting rough! But it is good to be home. Hugh's good friend from his early days with the railroad, Jim White, met us in Southampton and drove us up to their home in Cold Ash, a village in Berkshire, west of London. There we had a tasty lunch prepared by his wife, Isobel, waiting for us. It was a warm, sunny day -- the daffodils were all out! -- so the ... read more

Our adventure begins January 3rd when we fly from the Twin Cities to London-Heathrow. December will be a flurry of activity as we get ready to go. It should be easier this time around since I don't have the store to close down, just our home. And I'll have Hugh to help! We just can't wait to be back "home" on the Black Watch, the ship we met on two years ago. We hope many of the same crew will still be aboard, maybe even some of the same passengers. I've put the map together ahead of time so you will know our whole route in advance. Thanks for reading this and joining us as we set sail for South America!... read more

We did it! All the way around the world and then some. And we got home happy and well. The shipped was docked in Southampton when we woke up Monday morning. We ate a quick breakfast and then were among the first passengers allowed to go ashore. The Captain stood at the gangway shaking hands and saying goodbye. A very nice touch that was typical of our wonderful ship. We were able to quickly gather our suitcases and get our "private car" to come pick us up. We happily ran into Hugh in the pick-up area after we had already said our goodbyes on the ship, so he was able to help pack us into the car and see us on our way. The trip up to Heathrow Airport was uneventful. It was a beautiful spring ... read more
