Happy Tuesday! Hello friends, I am writing to you to share my love for eating for on-the-go traveling. Grubbing while traveling may seem like a hectic, stressful and expensive add on of your travel. Let me tell you there is plenty of stress free-budget friendly snacks that you can make ahead of time or prepare prior to your travels! One of my personal favorites is mixing up a batch of granola prior to traveling. When I say traveling I mean anything from backpacking, flying, camping, or a road trip up north. Granola is an easy to make health friendly snack for all to enjoy :) This morning, on my day off, thanks to my flexible float teacher job, I whipped up a batch of coconut-mango granola. On my trip to Hawaii this past January I was ... read more

Finally the end of another week! This was one of my favourites week by far. I worked with Andrea who is one of my good friends at camp and we had a pretty good cabin. one camper was autistic and ADHD so kept us busy And entertained but was a handful. She had an obsession with nature so loved the dragonflies and frogs that are everywhere. On Wednesday night we went down to the field and had big carnival type thing with music, dancing, water balloon fights, soccer etc and the girl with autism and ADHD spent the night collecting frogs at the field and putting them in her water bottle - she kept drinking the water from her bottle and we only found out that she had frogs in her bottle the following morning. Yuck! ... read more

We're off again….time to see a bit more of the world! After last year's Asian trip we've decided to visit a country not quite so far away this time, but one that is certainly very different from our home. Deepest, darkest Peru…the home of Paddington Bear! It's on the north west coast of South America and looks to have a wide variety of scenery from the Pacific coast, to the Andes mountains to the Amazon jungle. We're looking forward to seeing Incan ruins and spending a few days in the jungle too. Preparations have begun, with multiple immunizations last week. The kids were brave and the parents cried as we all had shots for Yellow Fever, Typhoid and Hepatitus A. And we've each got bottles of Malaria pills to take while we're there. While it is ... read more

The weeks are going faster and faster. I was in a sampler week which meant the kids left on Wednesday. Lauren, one of the girls I worked with this week, asked me if I wanted to go stay at her house on Wednesday and Thursday which was really nice. Her house was super fancy and it was nice to have a decent shower and sleep in a proper bed. It was nice to finally have some healthy fresh food and watch DVDs and relax. I also sent a few packages home because I was running out of space in my bags and I have a restriction on bag and weight limit for the contiki. Overall it was a pretty chilled out and relaxed week which was nice for a change. On Friday night hannah and I ... read more

What a great week! This week has most definitely been my favourite cabin so far. I had a group of 10 girls aged 11-13 and they were all brilliant. A few of the girls had pretty horrible backgrounds, one recently had her mother pass away from heart failure and her dad was accused to shooting someone, another girl explained that camp was the only place she felt truly safe and that's why she comes back each year. Those are he stories which really make me feel great about this job, that I am able to help make these girls have at least one fantastic week in summer and that they can look forward to it each year and not have to worry about anything and just be a kid. On Friday we had a big staff ... read more

This week has been one of my favourites so far. I worked with this girl named Turi and we are a lot alike. we had one of the youngest girl cabins and they were all fantastic. It was so much fun and they were adorable. one of the guys here, Taylor, lives in river falls in Wisconsin and he invited a group of us to visit on Friday night. We went out for a few drinks around the town which was a lot of fun! everyone is so laid back and very friendly which was great. People do not dress up like we do back home but it was a nice casual evening. The next day the camp director invited us all to play a game of soccer and have a barbecue at camp, it was ... read more

the past few weeks have been so busy so I have been a little slack at keeping in contact with family and friends back home. Last week was the camp healthy you week where kids that have high BMIs come for the week and learn about healthy eating and lifestyle. It was a great week, the girls cabin I had were great. Each morning they spent an hour with nurse staff and nutritionists going over healthy lifestyle factors and some counselor staff were put in this education time. I unfortunately was not part of this education time and I wish that I was because I would have benefitted a lot from it. The food at camp was specially prepared and the portion sizes were limited which I enjoyed because it wasn't buffet style, although the food ... read more

This was a tough week! Each year we have one week dedicated to kids with asthma and it's called camp super kids and it is always full to the max. On top of a full camp, we have roughly 40 nurses and 10 or so behavioral management staff that stay at camp for the week too. Four guys from a other YMCA camp came to help out this week, as did some staff from last year. A lot of the campers had behavioral issues which makes for a challenging week. I was initially assigned to be a 'floater' which meant I stay with the management staff in a separate cabin and help out where I can with the other cabins. However, on the second day, one of the boy counsellors had to leave due to family ... read more

This was a really tough week! It was the first full week with the kids and the camp was almost full. I had a group of 11-14 year old girls so it was very different from last week where the girls were 8-9. One of the girls arrived a day late which made it hard for all of us as we had gotten to know each other well in that first day. She was also the oldest in the cabin and had a rough upbringing so was a negative influence on the other girls and she didn't really want to be at camp. This week I took arts and crafts in the mornings and swimming in the afternoons. They were awesome activities to take and such fun! we have a giant inflatable trampoline in the lake ... read more
