We were late leaving this morning which semi got us in a little bit of an irritating situation later in the day. However, we needed the down time, and alls’ well that ends well! We pulled out of camp at 10:20. By the way, there was a sign in the campground office that we thought was pretty cute: “Camping: Where you spend a small fortune to live like a homeless person.” Our morning was perfect at 73 degrees and a low humidity level. Arriving in the town of Bemidji at 10:45 we went looking for information on the headwaters of the Mississippi. As it turns out from information we got at a Science Center in town and along the way at different venues during the day, the facts are clear in that—the facts are NOT clear! ... read more

First to finish up with yesterday: we took a walk by the Lake of the Woods after supper yesterday evening. You can see by the pictures that it was a very peaceful walk. As a matter of interest, I find the glaciated sculpting of the rocks that are the Canadian Shield to be fascinating. You can see by the pictures that tremendous pressure was put on these rocks by the glaciers that rode over them during glacial periods. They scraped everything down to the bedrock as they drove through, scratching the rocks as they went. This has always fascinated me. The striations are very clear. This morning when we got up the outside temp (wait for it Brently!) was 53 degrees with a crisp 60 degrees inside...until John got up and turned the heat on! We ... read more

4th of July camping trip to Bemidji Thurs. June 29, 2017: Our first trip to Bemidji. Since the 4th of July was on a Tuesday, we decided to make it a longer camping trip and go some place farther. We found an opening at Royal Oaks RV Park. The lady was very friendly and accommodating over the phone in getting us in. It was a 4 hour drive up. A longer drive than what we are used to. Arriving at the campground we noticed several others already here and also other motorhomes. We were greeted by the same friendly lady from on the phone. It's not a very large campground. Just off the main highways of 2 and 71. Our site was on 28 which was just a few sites away from the main entrance and ... read more

Our list of things for this summer included doing a bicycle trip in Minnesota so after exhaustive research(about an hour) we settled on the Paul Bunyan Trail. It runs from Bemidji to Brainerd and is a converted Burlington Northern lumber railroad track. We wanted to do a complete run without any backtracking so we hired a shuttle so we could leave our car at the southern trailhead (Brainerd) and then ride there from Bemidji. The Embracing Pines Bed and Breakfast north of Walker also does the shuttle so we booked there for the first night on the trail. We left West Hawk Lake early Monday morning and drove down to the South Junction border crossing via the Moose Lake road. It is about 400 Km and we arrived at the Super 8 in Bemidji about noon. ... read more

What a beautiful morning again! We have been so lucky with the weather - 70s and sunny here in Minneapolis. We haven't been so lucky with Jon's bug bites. He's really had a bad reaction from the mosquitos and we suspect people are starting to avoid us on the street because of his aggravated festering scabby spots. Well, its not actually that bad but the first stop today was the pharmacy for some more ointment. Before heading out of town, we stopped by the Sculpture Gardens for a wander around. It's a bit of a strange place being surrounded by highways into the city. Our two favourite sculptures were the spoon and the mirrors. We actually managed to become one person in those mirrors with Jon's head on my body. A truly horrifying look. We zipped ... read more

6/26/13 - Still at Hamilton's Fox Lake RV Park - we have decided to burn one of our two days ahead here. We went to Itasca State Park today, the location of the headwaters of the Mississippi. The Mississippi originates from Lake Itasca. At the headwaters, rocks span the river which is only about 20 to 25 feet wide. On one side of the rocks is Lake Itasca and the other is the Mississippi. Having lived along side the river downstream, it is amazing how the river goes from this size to better than a mile wide before completeing its 2500 mile journey. After the ride to the headwaters, we stopped by Paul Bunyan Animal Farm to check it out for tomorrow. One at the RV Park, we grilled steak, a stirfry of vegetables, green beans, ... read more

Hey Everyone! We're back in the States! Best thing about it is finally being able to use our cellphones again. Not so much for Ang. So where did we leave you off? It was Sault Ste Marie. So our travels brought us fron Ste Marie to Thunder Bay the day before yesterday. We left pretty early, and drove around the northern side of Lake Superior. This was probably one of the most pretty drives I've ever done. There were lakes and valleys on both sides of the highway at every turn. There were plenty of people on the road, and plenty of lake cottages, but you would come across a town only about once every 100 miles. It's a pretty secluded place, expecially if you veer off the lakes at all. We probably did about 9 hours ... read more

June 19-June 24 We stayed six days at Senic State Park in Minnisota. That is about an hour NW from Grand Rapids MN. Dan and I rented a two person kayak for one day but only caught more perch or was it sunfish. Anyway he was looking for bass. That is Dan's favorite fish to catch. We have seen a lot of deer along the roadside. Lots of loons on the lake. One red fox. Lots and lots of turtles. They like to deposit their eggs right next to the aspalt road. I expect it gets nice and toasty there but it seems dangerous for the turtles. We took one day and hiked in the Lost Forty. It is 40 acers that was missed during the logging days because they thought it was a lake ... read more

We pulled out of Lewis & Clark State Park, N Dakota on July 20. We have until August 1 to get to our next camp host assignment in SE Wisconsin. The plan is to go around Lake Superior on the north shore, reenter the US at Sault Ste Marie, and then head south into Wisconsin. The first night we stayed at Fort Stevenson, a ND state park near the Garrison Dam, which backs up the Missouri River to form Lake Sakakawea. one of the largest reservoirs in the US. Lewis & Clark S/P, our home for the past month is also on this lake, a hundred miles or so to the west. Fort Stevenson was built in 1867, primarily to protect settlers migrating to the west. It is a big park, with large grassy sites right ... read more
