Day 8 - Winding Down
Published: August 27th 2011North America » United States » Massachusetts » Martha's VineyardTook our last bike ride this morning through the State Forest again - dodging puddles from the rain last night. Forgot that we had the geocache GPS with us and looked for some of the geocaches we downloaded before coming to the island. We found 4 of them as we drove around doing other fun things today. Stopped to take another go at miniature golf - Drew and Mary Ann tied for par. Then capped off the day with a visit to Gay Head to go up the lighthouse and see our last sunset while we are on the island. ... read more
Day 7 - Up Island Day
Published: August 26th 2011North America » United States » Massachusetts » Martha's VineyardAnd again we started the day off with a bike ride. This time we took a little different route heading into Edgartown and looping back around to the State Forest along Barnes Road. We headed up island to Aquinnah where Gay Head cliffs is located. The boys had fun jumping the waves on Gay Head beach. There was a warning for Portugeuse Man of War (a poisonous jellifish) - kind of freaky. And a big hunk of wood came ashore out of nowhere. After the beach we got a few pictures of the cliffs and the lighthouse. No sunset tonight unfortunately because the clouds and some rain swooped in. ... read more
Day 6 - Touring the Island

We visited the Field Gallery - always enjoy taking pictures with the field sculptures. Then off to the Glass Works to see blowing of a great vase. Drew had the chance to throw some pottery at Chilmark Pottery. And we capped off the day with sailing on Edgartown Harbor watching a beautiful sunset.... read more

Published: August 24th 2011North America » United States » Massachusetts » Martha's VineyardKayaking at the Felix Neck Nature Sanctuary was amazing. Saw many varieties of crabs and critters, cormorantes, a blue heron, and lots of mussels clinging to the salt marsh shore line. Headed off to Menemsha to hang at the beach for the rest of the day and enjoy an amazing sunset.... read more
Day 4 - Cape Pogue Lighthouse
Published: August 23rd 2011North America » United States » Massachusetts » Martha's VineyardStarted off with another bike ride. Ended up being about 15 miles because we got lost in the forest (stop laughing). We decided to check out the Cape Pogue lighthouse on Chappaquidik Island. Takes a ferry ride from Edgartown and then an over sand vehicle ride to see this peaceful sight. We could see about 5 miles from on top - great views. Spent some time in Edgartown: great seafood dinner and then of course ice cream again. It was so clear we decided to stop at South Beach to see the sunset. Just beautiful.... read more
Day 3 - The Beach
Published: August 23rd 2011North America » United States » Massachusetts » Martha's VineyardWe settled in today starting with a 10 mile bike ride. Sean and Mary Ann shared a tandem bike while Dean and Drew rode hybrids. We headed out to South Beach at Katama and the boys enjoyed time "swimming" into the waves and battling the seaweed. Of course we had to go into town to have ice cream at Mad Martha's and then buy some fudge at Murdichs. We tried to catch the sunset at Menemsha Harbor but the clouds got in the way. Still a beautiful peaceful sight.... read more

"I owe it all to little chocolate donuts." John Belushi
Published: March 7th 2011North America » United States » Massachusetts » Martha's VineyardNew England in late winter…..the snow has finally melted, the temperatures threaten to break 50 degrees, the winds continue to blow on the coast and you just have to get out of the house for a while because if you don’t…..you get the fever. Cabin fever. And there’s only one cure for it…..pack up the car and head on out. We are writing about our weekend adventure but need to apologize for the photos because Mother Nature did not cooperate with us because it is after all early March. But it’s not raining so off we went…..to see a few places before we leave this unique part of America. Of course Miss Lillie had to go as well. She’s probably the best-traveled dog in these parts. Half Way House!
Published: July 25th 2009North America » United States » Massachusetts » Martha's VineyardI'm officially half way through my American Adventure! How exciting! It's the end of the two week session now and I am absolutely EXHAUSTED! Two weeks without a break slowly sucks the life out of you!! Luckily we get a two day weekend to recover! This session we had two out of camp trips! One to a little river to do some kayaking which was kind of cool we saw a whole bunch of wildlife and kayaked around and ate in the boats and what not! I got super burnt because I kept reminding the kids to put sunblock on and forgot to do my own. It turned into quite a nice tan but now it's massively peeling off :( The other trip was to go White Water rafting which was really really fun. The white ... read more
Martha's Vineyard - purdiest thang you ever did see
Published: June 9th 2009North America » United States » Massachusetts » Martha's VineyardAnna needed a rest day so Darren took off from Falmouth headed for Martha's Vineyard, an island 7 miles off Cape Cod. He did a half day bus tour of the island, and managed to take in 70-80% of what the driver had to say. Each town has a distinct style. It's home to many celebrities and the population swells by 80% in summer. At the end of the tour Darren walked Oak Bluffs and enjoyed the many gingerbread house cottages that serve as holiday houses. The town seems so perfect that it could be straight out of the movie 'The Truman Show.' ... read more
