Awoke to find the weather unchanged at around 11 degrees and still very windy. We checked out of the Newport Bay Club & Hotel around 10am but not before Kerry did some research looking for a diner for breakfast / brunch on the route to Boston. She settled on the Pandolphi’s Mattapoisett Diner and we arrived at 11am. It’s one of the older classic diners with the shiny silver tram style design with the double entry door system so the cold winds stay outside. Kerry had some french toast with caramelised apple with pumpkin spice mousse on top and I had 2 eggs over easy with rye bread and home fries (aka small potatoes) and coffee of course. Next stop was about 40 minutes away at Plymouth Rock on the coast on Cape Cod. When we ... read more

Okay history buffs, this trip was for you! The city, history, museums is not my favorite activity BUT I heard that accessing downtown Boston is super easy and I really wanted to get out and about today. It has been raining, windy, power outages, even Hanscom Air Force Base has been without power for four days now. Listening in on the water cooler conversations around base and researching the commute online I came up with the following plan. Drive Hwy 2, not the 95 (to avoid the morning commuters), park at Alewife Station, purchase a two-stop subway pass ($4.80), take the red line to Park St. That put me at the Boston Common off Tremont St. That was the beginning of the Freedom Trail that I followed. Approximately 2 miles long, lots of wait time at ... read more

This is my 100th published blog. I started the blog when I retired and it is a good record of our travels. We arrived in Boston by train. A short trip from Providence. We take an Uber to our hotel. It is 3:00 and raining so we decide to go to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The day is almost over and admission is $27 but we decide to go anyway. Yea, we arrive and find out it is one of the few free days. I thought the museum would be crowded but it is not. Since we are short on time we will focus on European art, our favorite. The museum also has the Obama Portraits and the cost is $25 but since today is free day entrance to the Obamas's portraits are free ... read more

This morning we woke up and prepared breakfast - fried eggs on brioche toast with Swiss cheese. Shelley made her tea, and I brewed up some Chock Full ‘O Nuts coffee that I had bought at Walmart the night before. With breakfast done, we turned our attention to getting the RV ready for our trip from our campsite to park it up at the Ferry Terminal in Hingham, Massachusetts. The parking lot was huge and cost $2.00 bucks to park for the day. We took the ferry across the harbour from HIngham to Boston landing right at the edge of downtown…steps away from the Quincy Market. We had Maggie in her backpack carrier and she loved being able to come with us. Today is Maggie’s 1st birthday, so she spent it in style. From the ferry, ... read more

Dear All Greetings, in this my final blog entry on my amazing two-week trip around New England. If it hasn't been made clear so far, I absolutely loved this trip! After a couple of mini-trips to the Isle of Man and Ireland earlier in the year, it was my first proper travelling trip in quite a while, and it thoroughly confirmed not only how much I just love travelling, but also how much I love the United States of America! I will certainly be back again in future years to explore more. Last time I wrote, I believe I was settling in for my final evening in my cosy accommodation in West Springfield. I had a slightly more unsettled sleep on my second night there, after realising that the boiler in the basement flat came on ... read more

Dear All Yay! Greetings from London! I am back from an amazing two-week trip around New England, USA. As mentioned in my first blog entry on this trip, the day before I left, I planned during this journey to publish the blog entries of my travels when I got back home. On longer trips I normally publish as I travel - this trip was fairly long, but still a shorter trip, in which I'd be aiming to spend most of my time packing lots of travelling into each day. I thus didn't think I would have time to write and publish as I go, and this certainly turned out to be true. I'd say I was out each day for around 10 to 12 hours, so would indeed have had little time to write in the ... read more

Yes, I went in the sweltering heat of July. But it was well worth it, even better than the Capitol Fourth in DC. From 2018: Not only do I finally get to attend this great event, it is held on both July 3 AND July 4!!!! The poster says: Conductor Keith Lockhart directs the Boston POPS Orchestra at the Hatch Shell, on the Esplanade, performing the identical concert which will be played on July 4th minus the fireworks display. Seating for this free event is on a first come basis, it will be crowded, but not as much as on the 4th. This year's headliner is Rachel Platten, along with The Indigo Girls, Rita Moreno, and Rhiannon Giddens. Yes, I will miss both John Williams and the famous maestro himself, Arthur Fiedler. ... read more

Thankfully the day dawned slightly less arctic and wet than previous and we felt confident that the New Year’s celebrations would go ahead. Geoff headed to Samuel Adams for his morning mash beer tasting and the girls and I took it easy at home. After yet another turkey meal (sadly not the last), we braved the weather and wandered to the Common. It seems that word had spread from Central Park and we were greeted by many squirrels. Thankfully they had also heard of my love of a boneyard, so hung in there to keep the younger participants occupied while I meandered through the headstones. A quick visit to Copley Square revealed that yesterday’s weather had delayed the ice sculptures so we retreated to a cafe for some warming snacks. Some more squirrel time, this time ... read more

And we saw a few! Wet dogs that is...only precious few souls braving this truly ridiculous weather. When we were on the interstate, there were signs up warning a ‘winter weather advisory’ - storms, wind, ice...’a wintry mix’ so my weather app told me. Apparently a wintry mix in Boston is rain mixed with sleet, mixed with horizontal rain and sleet mixed with wind whipping your legs so it feels like -9 (so says my app) until you can’t actually feel your legs at all! But bugger that, we’ve a city to explore! I will admit to a slightly slower start than normal and a sternly issued warning that it was raining yes, and it was cold, yes, but I was NOT GOING TO LISTEN TO WHINGING. So, a quick fire visit to Boston Common (wet ... read more

Had an early start today, in contrast to our customary 10.00 lie in of the last few days. Our destination was still a surprise for Beeb, which we had code-named ‘making gingerbread’. So she was quite surprised when we turned up in an empty field with some ruined buildings. The surprise could last no longer as we headed towards a couple of Harris Hawks tethered to perches in the field. We had arrived at New England Falconry. After a quick rundown on the behaviour of the birds and the history of falconry, we took to the field to practise this craft. The girls were given a glove and shown what to do, and as if it had been trained to do so, the hawk flew from the tree to their glove, sat there for a while ... read more
