It's 23.43 on the 20th March. I'm getting pretty tired this evening, so the entry may be fairly concise. We woke up today in good time to catch breakfast, around 9.30, then set about readying ourselves for the day ahead. Around the breakfast table we decided that today we were going to walk the Freedom Trail, which takes us around all the major historical landmarks of Boston. The trail was of course all outside, so we needed to wrap up warm. In actuality it didn't seem quite so cold today as the wind has died down, but still the air was freezing. The trail started in the Boston Common, just outside our hostel and wound its way North through downtown Boston and across the river into the dockyards, where it ended up by the Bunker Hill ... read more

It's 23.05 on Thursday 19th March. Today has been or first full day in Boston. I think pretty much all of our nights were a little disturbed last night, as often they are in a new place. Because of this, I didn't wake properly this morning until 9.55. I attempted to rouse the others but they were having none if it, so I headed down on my own to catch the last 5 minutes of the free breakfast the hostel offers every morning. After filling up on bread and cereal I headed back upstairs to find the others still in bed, but at least awake. For the next few hours we slowly got ready to head out, trained and played a little pool in the common area. Once everyone was showered and suitably layered out we ... read more

It's 22.25 on Wednesday the 18th. Today has been the first day travelling since we have got here. In that sense it is perhaps the first day that we have felt that this trip is more than just a holiday - it has really begun in earnest. We rose at 8 this morning and readied ourselves for moving on, albeit grudgingly, from George's flat. With a last glance at the view we headed down the 40 floors to the lobby, past the porters, and into the courtyard. You could tell instantly that it was markedly colder than it had been previously. Is was not just a cold wind, but the air was cold and the sun no longer held any warmth. From the apartment it was a 12 block walk to Port Authority Bus Terminal which, ... read more

Montreal to Boston We're up at 5.30 am to catch the 8-15am Greyhound bus to Boston, Mass, USA. It's pretty misty and for once Montreal looks pretty nice & atmospheric in the Old City area. Sad really that it takes mist to make it feel cool! Anyway it’s goodbye to Canada & we aren’t sure we will be back this way again. The bus drive takes us past open pasture farm land tinged with autumnal colours and some typically French looking settlements and farm buildings on the Canadian side. We make the US border in 1.15 hours. We are all required to get off the bus and go for passport checks and a few security questions then we're cleared to get back on the bus. C is concerned that the passports didn't get stamped (administrative laziness ... read more

Hello, Boston! It's been a long time. 12 flights, 12 destinations, 2 months, 2 sicknesses, 9 countries, and 9 airlines. What a trip, though. Last night, we took it a bit easy, since we had to finish packing and be out by 10. We went to a nearby restaurant for dinner, then went bowling at an alley right next to the hotel. This morning was just as simple: get up, pack, and get out. We went straight to the airport, where we got breakfast, checked in, found the gate, and hung out until the flights left. It turns out that, for some reason, Icelandair has 2 flights to Boston out of Reykjavik: one at 17:00, and one at 17:25. This is the only city that even had two flights on their departure screen. Anyway, it turns ... read more

After we had upset the hotel staff again and recovered from the shock of the cost of the car park, we drove to the JFK Museum and Memorial Library. The name is an obvious clue as to what it's about, but for some reason we had been expecting it to be more about American politics in general, given that our son will be studying that next year. That said, it didn't disappoint as there was a lot to learn and JFK has a particular place in the American psyche. As well as the obvious (he was one of two presidents that had been assassinated (we should all know who the other one was), there were substantial developments in civil rights; there was the space race with the Russians and the start of the race to the ... read more

Here's a question! At a self-service buffet breakfast that is included in the cost of the hotel room, how much are you supposed to tip the waiters, as they clearly expect a tip? After we had probably upset all the hotel staff, again, we headed out of the hotel to catch the hop-on, hop-off trolley. We had bought all our tickets in advance (along with several of the other things that we wanted to do) so we thought it would be a case of just getting on it. Alas not. First of all there are several trolley services and it seemed that everyone we tried was the wrong one. Then you have to get the vouchers converted into tickets before you can get on the trolley and there are only limited places where that can be ... read more

As with all our trips to America, it started with rain, but hopefully like the others it will improve as the time goes on. It wasn't ideal conditions, but we thought we would start with a guided walk along the History Trail. This started at Boston Common, covered Beacon Hill and the Massachusetts State House, the Old Granary Burial Ground, the Old State House, the Old City Hall (which is now a restaurant), the New City Hall (which is widely agreed to be the ugliest building in America) and ending at the site of the Boston Massacre. History does not put the people of our home country in very good light, particularly a number of individual cases of injustice, which, along with the taxes, fueled the revolutionary spirt. There were several cases of crimes by the ... read more
