BACK IN U.S.A Over the holidays I expected to stay in Vietnam. There was a meditation class I had hoped to attend. That could not happen. With no other plans, I thought of going home for a couple of weeks. Once I was headed that way, I felt my time in Vietnam was done. "Something" told me I was ready to leave. I had a wonderful stay, yet most advantages were behind me, and the drawbacks (every situation has at least a few) would continue. There were no major problems, but the joy was not what it had been. Saturday, 6 June After a leisurely packing up in the morning, we left the Virginia Beach KOA headed towards D.C. and the Capitol KOA in Millersville, Maryland, about 215 miles and 3 or 4 hours driving. Along the way, we continued to find eccentric glitches in the GPS program, Street Atlas 2009, where it would either fail to tell us North or South for an upcoming highway change, or lose track of where we were, showing our car driving thru an empty meadow and telling us to turn back, or something equally strange. In spite of the horrendous traffic in and near D.C., we finally reached our new KOA around 3pm. Preparation-Preparation There were a few jobs to cross off the list, to make this a very special day for Bryce & Tina. It was forecasted, to be a paltry 100F! and 100 % humidity (38celcius & dripping). Bobby & Bucky worked hard to restore power to the Pavillion- home of the ceremony. Then managed also to string up - with B's help I think!- cute fairy lights. Kristen single handedly, not deterred by the hungry mossies, set up all the tables. Nat & James rolled menu card's, Margo & Marie spent hours putting together some stunning floral arrangements, button-holes and boquets. I bumbled around Margo's kitchen, making the food, & managing to avoid "potty mouth'- no mean feat. Kristen managed to whip up some amazing Maryland Crabcakes, with a Remoulade sauce. Margo & Buckys~for the Rehersal Dinner Kristen went all out, to put on with Margo right by her side, an amazing Rehersal Dinner for B&T. We don't venture into these in NZ or in the UK, but I have to say, I am sold! K prepared, their family Christmas meal, which made it even more special. Paella - with chorizo, chicken, prawns, mussels adn who knows what else! with a Layered Salad (not for the faint hearted) and gallons of Sangria - far too damn good. Margo, magically (aided by Bucky and Marie - with Bobby on yard duties) transformed her pool area into 3 beautiful tables, topped with flowers. Too much talent in one place! I bumbled around, unpacking hireage gear, and re-arranged Margo's entire house into a pseudo catering venue. Patient paitent lady :) ... read more

Okay, so I didn't actually type in this entry on the 5th of January, in fact I'm typing it in on the 24th. I'm doing a little catching up. My official start date for my road trip was actually the 2nd of January and I decided to crawl before running since 5 months living out of a stationwagon is a little intimidating to me. So I drove out to Brookeville, Maryland which I think is further north than Bowie, less than an hour from Annapolis, nice and safe. In Brookeville live the parents of Alyce Fernebok, Harvey and Bonnie. Alyce was my roomate for 4 years at USNA and it's beginning to feel like I've known her parents almost as long as my own :) so I knew it would be a comfortable place to start. ... read more
