We woke up to the sound of rain this morning. Shelley prepared some coffee and tea for us (I’m still enjoying the “Chock full o’ Nuts” I bought in Middleborough that first day. Time now to fix up some breakfast and review the maps. Maybe walk over and grab a shower. The weather was really unsuitable for anything today except for a fine day to ‘stay in’. Other than the odd walk to the little store here for some change for the shower, and to do some laundry. I crawled up into the crawl space above the driver’s area and took a nap (two hours!) and Shelley ‘n Maggie slept on the bed and watched Simpsons! We’ve opened up the bar, and I’m trying out a small bottle of Jameson’s Black Barrel with Shelley enjoying some ... read more

I had a wonderful experience visiting Maine last week. I was invited to stay with a couple friends who have family with a house on the island of Vinalhaven, which if off the coast from a town called Rockland. Pronounced vine-el-haven, the island has a lobster industry and the island wasn't overrun with touristy stuff even though Memorial weekend is apparently when their season gets started. I had my first fresh oysters and am a huge fan! So, one fairy ride from the mainland and I was on the island with my friends! They were so kind as to take me for various hikes around island to see the beautiful views, smell the sweet air, and get a feel for the place. I'll be back - such a beautiful place.... read more

The Harpswells Another day of sleeping in a bit. Tarragon enjoyed the extra attention as we lounged in bed. He has gotten in the habit that once we get up, he hides under the bed, afraid he is about to be put in the travel case. We purposely did not have anything else but coffee for breakfast as we know lunch was going to be quite filling. Our first stop of the day was Portland Architectural Salvage. A four-story building full of eclectic items ranging from antique furniture to hard-to-find hardware pieces. We were primarily here to see if we could find an entry way piece for our apartment. We did not have any luck so it was on to lunch. While we were looking for parking for the salvage store, we happened upon the relocated ... read more

The best part of a last minute get out of town getaway, is the itinerary is very loose. This allowed us to choose to sleep in this morning, instead of get up and set out for our normally jammed packed day. All three of us enjoyed an extra 90 minutes of sleep all the way until 8:30 am. No breakfast today, just some weak coffee from the pantry down the hall, only one cup as the machine stop working as it needed to be cleaned. We got on the road to Bath around 10:45 a quick 45-minute drive on Interstate 295 then on to U.S. 1. Bath is most known for its ship building industry, Bath Iron Works makes most of the U.S. Navy destroyers. It is also home to the Maine Maritime Museum, which preserves ... read more

After a good night’s sleep, we started the day with our Covid $5 continental breakfast. Bagel, cream cheese, yogurt and coffee. The coffee is self-serve in the pantry down the hall and unfortunately Starbucks, and not the strong stuff at that. To get the breakfast you needed to go to the lobby and pick it up from the restaurant. The bagel was just a bagel, not even sliced, but it was $5 and convenient. Tarragon got his breakfast and some love and we took our time getting ready. No big plans for the day just lunch, some spa time for me, and dinner. A pretty laid-back day. First on the agenda was lunch at High Roller’s Lobster Co. The best way to describe this is that it is a combination a 50’s style drug store counter ... read more

The plan was to leave Sunday the 18th for Judith Point, to catch the 4 pm Ferry to Block Island. We had booked a nice Bed & Breakfast on the island, Ferry reservations paid for, plans made, then work happened. Due various mishaps, not the least of which was FedEx was not exactly express, the trip had to be cancelled at the last minute. We did manage to be very lucky and come up with a quick last-minute backup, a trip to Portland Maine. Having been there twice before we new all the places to eat and stay, especially the hotel that allowed cats. Were able to make all the dinner reservations on Sunday and the hotel reservation actually were made Monday afternoon, minutes before we picked up the care and headed out of town. Portland ... read more

April 20, 2021. This blog entry is being written months after our Fall 2020 New England Trip. It was our first vacation amid Covid and quite the experience, some good some bad. I was also in recovery from retina detachment surgery so was pretty uncomfortable most of the trip. Of course, it is not the vacation we had planned. We had previously rescheduled our Ireland/Scotland Trip to be taken at this time. However, Covid was still in full swing and travel restrictions fully in place. We rescheduled again for May 2021 (needless to say that isn’t happening either and it is now scheduled for May 2022) In this blog I will just be going over some of the highlights. It will mostly be a pictorial blog. Let me start with the good, the bad, and the ... read more

Its NE Maine and the Great North Woods. The route keeps inside the White Mountain National Forest, going South for a while, through small towns and lakes. In the forest close to Lovell I was stopped by someone who advised that the road ahead was blocked by a recently fallen tree. I decided to carry on. A bike can often cross where cars fear to tread. My gamble turned out well. With the help of three strong young people, I was able to tip the bike on its side and drag it under the tree. Once through I carried on down to Lovell and bought an axe. Returning to the scene of the crime, I found two cars blocked by the tree. Another strong young guy volunteered to chop through the tree trunk, so I gave ... read more

As promised, although I don't think I actually did... but here are my favorite Maine State Parks and Historical Sites. I think I'm going to try and rank them... we shall see. 10. Aroostook State Park This may have gotten on the list because it was the final stamp we needed. Not many people are going camping up in Northern Maine, with that being said, it makes for a relaxing and quiet destination. Why I Love It: It's secluded, has large camp sites, plenty of showers, a entertainment/game room, pond, and some really welcoming wardens. 9. Ferry Beach State Park Old Orchard Beach is a very popular and, in my opinion, overly hyped beach. It's often crowded in the summer, dirty, and has barely any parking. Crescent Stat... read more
