We stayed in a park about 2 miles outside of Bangor called Pumpkin Patch RV Resort. Had really poor cell and Wi-Fi service so that is why I got so far behind my blog posts. It was probably some procrastination on my part also; I seem to have motivation problems in retirement. We went to Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory. The observatory is 420 feet and 42 stories and the tallest occupied structure in Maine. The observatory had an elevator to take us up to almost the top. I then had to climb about 20 steps but they had a lift that took Bonnie up the rest of the way. The view from up top was amazing of the river, bridge, bay, countryside and Fort Knox. After coming down from the bridge we ... read more

Our first stop today was the town of Plymouth. We drove down to the waterfront to see a replica of the Mayflower and the infamous Plymouth Rock. The Mayflower II seemed pretty spacious until to realized that there were over 120 people and all their stuff on board for a 66 day voyage. We talked with a few interpreters who were playing the parts of the crew on the ship and then looked at the different sections of the ship. The First officer seemed to have gone a bit crazy from the sea, and the Captain spoke about death a lot. Next to the ship was a small portico that protected Plymouth Rock. There was a docent there talking about the rock. Apparently it wasn't a big deal until 120 years after the Pilgrims landed when ... read more

Geo: 44.0985, -70.2184Once again we are venturing out to discover new places and have new experiences, all while escaping the hottest part of the summer in Florida. So, northward we go. The plan this year is to head NE into Canada's provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Although we lived our lives in Maine, we have never visited this part of Canada, even though it was relatively close by and The Cat was cruising out of Portland regularly on overnight trips to Halifax. We just never thought about doing it. So, there is no time like the present. Then we will head west in Canada and visit the two remaining southern provinces we have not been to, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Check, check. As I do every year, I give myself a pep ... read more

So here we are 'on vacation' here in the US, visiting Damon, Sarah, and the grandkids Elliott and Layla. Our first week was just a catch-up with them all at home in Silver Spring, Maryland, but for our second week, we decided to take a trip all together to Maine, the most far North-Eastern state of the US, which borders with Canada. It wasn't a great start with our short flight. Since we were unable to confirm seating on the flight prior to the day, and wanted to ensure the 4 and 2 year-olds sat with their parents, we made it to Washington National airport 2 hours earlier than required, only to be told they couldn't seat us all until we were ready to board. So we ended up with a totally unnecessary 2 hour wait ... read more

Day 9 - Friday, May 13, 2016 - Bar Harbor, Maine - Weather forecast: partly cloudy in the morning - temperature: 9°C/48°F - actual: temperature 14°C/57°F - in the afternoon bright sunny skies emerged for a short time - we gained an hour back last night Bar Harbor, being our first US port on the cruise, required the entire ship to go through a face-to-face inspection by the US Customs & Border Protection. the exercise was very well organized as they assigned specific decks to meet with the agents at specific times, our time being 9:30 am. Things moved along at a steady pace and we were called a good 45 minutes before the assigned time. No fuss no bother. Bar Harbor is actually on an island and does not possess a dock large enough to ... read more

Geo: 44.9653, -69.1086 New Year's Day is unarguably my least favorite holiday. I have only infrequently enjoyed celebrating a New Year's Eve, even in high school and college when parties were abundant and generally stupid, with my dates' parents embarrassingly dressing up in diapers and acting infantile. Was this to impress their young? It certainly did, but not in the way I think those parents expected. And where was there to go after we escaped a family's party? Only to another home, probably no better, or to a bar, which has never appealed to me. So we'd drive around, find a place to park, and finally come home after midnight was acceptably behind us. My favorite New Year's Eve was actually when I lived in Thailand, when 2011 was turning into 2012. I was staying at ... read more

October 25, 2015 Photos from Pemaquid Lighthouse Photos from Portland Lighthouse Photos from Nubble Lighthouse and York Beach The Bradley Inn was a wonderfully pleasant experience. We had a blissful sleep and awoke to the hope of a magnificent morning. It was still too dark to tell, but the view out our window told us it wouldn’t matter what the weather would be. This place even looks good when it’s bad. The plan was to head over to the Pemaquid Light, come back for a fine breakfast at the inn, and head to Portland Head Light for the so-so light of afternoon. We’d then check into our digs in York for a sunset series at the Cape Neddick Lighthouse. The first exposure from th... read more

Sunday, October 25, 2015 Photos from Marshalls Lighthouse Photos from Pemaquid Lighthouse Photos from Pemaquid with painterly expressions We woke up and continued packing where we left off sometime yesterday. It was Sunday, and the intent was to leave before the games were afoot, yet late enough to get in some more quality time with our hosts, Stubdude & Juno. We wanted to reach Marshalls Lighthouse in Port Clyde in time for the so-so light of mid afternoon, and then be on time for some sunset shots at the Pemaquid Lighthouse (my favorite, and now I think Matt’s, too). The ride from anywhere to anywhere in Maine will take you on interesting roads, and our trek mainly kept us on US1, the only road in our count... read more

Thursday, October 22, 2015 Photos from this (our first) day in Maine Maine is a very special place on this planet for me, not just because of the natural beauty that flows through the land and consequently from the people who live there, but because of the most enjoyable times spent there over the years. My cousin, writer James K. Straub, aka Stubdude, and his wonderful wife, artist June Kellogg, have been living there since the 80s, and I visit the fun nearly every October. I choose October rather than the popular summer months because that’s the Maine I love. The money changers, so to speak, and consuming crowds traditionally leave by Columbus Day, October 12th, and the state is left with only real Mainers –the ones who brave out the winters. Earlier this year we ... read more
