This is the 10th part of a series about my trip on my 2005 883 Low Harley Sportster ‘Effie’ from Kansas City to Novia Scotia and back. This was part of my vacation from 4 to 20 AUG 2006
Sun 13 AUG 06
Whats a vacation for if not sleeping in, woke up at 9am and left the hotel at 10am.
Great weather if not on the chilly side. I rode in my coat all day, but after crossing the Canadian border it got colder as the sun went down. Maine had some great views and I stopped a few times for a quick picture. There was one dealer that was open on Sunday Central Maine HD, it was just an accessories store as it only had 1 bike in the showroom. But there custom shirt was great, the front says ‘the way life should be’ and it’s a lobster riding a Harley, with a Maine harbor in the background. The store closes at 5PM, I got there at 4:45 and she locked up and left at 4:55. I was glad I had rushed those last few miles. Maine’s slogan is ‘vacationland’, but it is mini big sky for
me. I was getting that Montana warm and fuzzy as the sky was a beautiful blue.
I crossed into Canada with no hassle at the route 1 bridge crossing. I was hoping there would be a Mile 0 sign at this end of the US1 like there was on the other end in Key West. I rode on for awhile but then with only 40 miles to go to St Johns I decided to just call it quits for the night, because of the dark I was missing some great Kodak moments. I had never seen this part of Canada and I wanted to SEE it. I was cold but didn’t want to stop to bundle up so the next motel I would pull into for the night. That would be the Groves Motel in St. George NB. At C$74 for the night, it is really nice. I don’t think the motel is very old and the furnishings all look new, including the carpet. The bath/shower insert is the best one I have ever seen. This is what I want to put in my bathroom. The owner is 82 years old and deaf as a post, with and without
his hearing aid. I came in as another visitor was trying to communicate with him. She (also 82) wanted toilet paper, but didn’t want to say it aloud with me in the room. Finally her daughter just yelled it out so he could hear it. Sweet man, but got just enough of what you were saying to respond about something else. Talking to him was kind of like that old commercial with the row of ladies all under hair dryers gossiping, but they are getting everything wrong.
There is another Harley here, a couple from Niagra Falls headed to the north end of NS, the island that juts out there has a great trail for riding (Cabot Trail). He talked about how great this trail was. As he described it, it sounded like the ride that Steve at the HOG rally had told me about and a couple other people. I looked at the map and altered my route, I will drop Halifax and instead go to Cabot Trial. The weather report says no rain but low 70’s for weather. Looks to be another coat day, better than 110 though. So its 2am and I am going to bed.
