The main reason I am visiting New Orleans is my long-time friend Kenbob. Ken and I have been friends, since meeting in Chicago, on a business trip in 1980. Forty years of friendship can make anyone endure more than they bargain for. In this case, his wife, Nelly, is a lovely Filipina, and loves the Miss Universe pageant. I was told that the Miss U is a Filipina addiction or built in genetically, a way of life, perhaps even more. When we met up in Hotlanta a few years ago, the Miss U pageant was held in their hometown of Atlanta. Ken is a lifelong Atlantan, and Nelly is a relative newcomer. But they were staying at the Atlanta Marriott, even though they live in Atlanta. Why? To be close to the action!!! I even got ... read more

19th August, 2022 It was an extremely slow start this morning. We were up talking till after 2am. All feeling just a tad dusty. We went next door to Daisy Dukes for breakfast. Gail ordered a Bloody Mary and it was two for the price of one so I said I would have the other. I took one mouthful and almost choked. It was full of hot sauce … blehhhhh! I just got orange juice after that. Sandra had a Hurricane which was also two for one. We had pancakes with maple syrup which were pretty good. Back to the room to let that go down and we decided that we would walk up to the French Quarter. We had to stop in to a souvenir shop for Sandra to take a pic. We got almost ... read more

20th August, 2022 Up early this morning as we drove out to Destrehan Plantation for a tour and a look around. The main house itself wasn’t much to look at, but the out buildings and slaves quarters were very interesting. We were quite shocked to learn how many different owners the plantation had had over the years. Also, how many slave children grew up there to also become slaves as soon as they turned 12. We walked the grounds with the beautiful trees before the cloud came over again threatening to rain. We were on our way back to New Orleans when the heavens opened again. It rains very hard here. We had to park the car in a car park a little further down the street as the original one was closed. We didn’t get ... read more

18th August, 2022 Had some toast and Vegemite with orange juice for breakfast this morning, felt just like home. We went for a quick walk along Canal St while waiting for Gail and Jeff to arrive. We weren’t out for very long when the clouds darkened and the rain started. We dashed back to the apartment and watched the rain pouring. There was a bit of a thunderstorm to go with the rain. Gail and Jeff arrived around 12:30. We spent the afternoon catching up. We went out for a walk and ended up at a daiquiri bar eating nachos and sipping on a frozen margarita. When we finished there, we walked past a mobile weed truck. It seems its legal just about everywhere in USA now. Back to the room to get ready for our ... read more

17th August, 2022 The alarm went off at 5:30 and we were in a Lyft ride by 6:15 to get to the airport. We had to take two flights and connect through Dallas, Texas. The first flight was on time and we had no problems. The only thing was we had a very short layover time. The passengers were taking their time to get off the plane, so we had to practically run to the shuttle train to get to our next flight on the other side of Dallas airport. We were last on and if we had have been 5 mins later, it would have left without us. We flew over some of the spaghetti type freeways they have there. Don’t know how they can possibly navigate them without getting totally lost. Landed in New ... read more

One of our missions for today was to try and actually find the French Market (see ), but first we had booked to go for a Mississippi cruise on Natchez Steamboat. The boat was actually called The City of New Orleans, so I'm not sure what has happened there? Also I didn’t see a lot of steam, not that it matters, but our Steamboat Natchez cruise was on the diesel ship City of New Orleans. I'll just call it a paddle-wheel boat as that is at least accurate. Like I say, none of that matters. A warning for anyone who has booked the paddle-wheel boat online, you will need to get your online receipt changed for actual tickets otherwise you will need to queue all over again - not that we would do such a silly ... read more

Unlike Houston, which seemed like the safest American city we have ever been to (despite the Texans' love of guns), New Orleans has got quite a different reputation. I was therefore on strict instructions that there were to be no early morning photography outings. One of the specialities here is a spiced rice and meat dish called Jambalaya. It was on the menu, but I really didn’t feel that it was something that I wanted to have for breakfast. My wife gave it a go though. We thought we would start the day by heading down to Jackson Square and then to the French Market. The French Quarter is actually more compact than we thought and it did not take long to walk there at all, which involved crossing over the now considerably more subdued Bourbon ... read more

I was awake early and after lying in bed for a while debating some early morning photography of downtown, I eventually decided to get up and go for it. There was plenty of time to get there and I had a rough idea where to go on The Allen Parkway, where I remembered seeing some parking alongside Eleanor Tinsley Park as we drove past on our way to Montrose. I parked (free parking until 9.00am) and walked along the edge of the park to the Rosemont Pedestrian Bridge. I couldn't have parked further away if I had tried, so it was quite a long walk alongside a lot of parking space. Sadly, I'd made the same mistake I made the last time (see ) and my lenses were still cold from the air-conditioning so they kept ... read more

MSN Espresso just listed the world's most magical streets. These postcard-pretty streets are home to unique architectural features and historic sites. People usually flock to the most beautiful streets in the world for their unique character, history, and atmosphere. Let's take a virtual stroll down some of the most magical streets in the world. Here is my opinion about their choices. Avenue des Champs-Elysees Yes, definitely prettier at night Bourbon Street Very tacky, but I still find it interesting and fun Las Vegas Strip A place to visit only once! Broadway and Times Square I enjoy it, for about two days, max! Boulevard St. Laurent The best street in Montreal Steiner Street Who does not love the "painted ladies" of San Francisco Shibuya Tokyo's busiest, with two million crossings each day, exciting, fun and home to ... read more
