Yesterday was an interesting, boring, and also fantastic day. We shopped, ate, waited, walked and watched. It was pretty awesome. The day began with a 30 minute run into the Garden District to burn a little of that Emeril's dinner off and then as usual with the very busy breakfast here at the hotel, which was so hectic and busy it took 20 minutes to assemble the meal. The running is funny, when we step out from the hotel we always say, "oh, it's not that hot, this should be fine"...but by the end of the run we are so hot we can stop sweating for an hour. It really creeps up on you here in the south.
After breakfast we went out shopping. We had to pick up some souvenirs and Jackie was looking for a nice pair of dressy flat sandals to match her dress for dinner at August. It was quite a goose chase, checking a bunch of stores, walking alot, no one having the right sizes, and 30 seconds spent in Sacks Fifth Avenue spent peering at the bottom of a gold colour flip flop and noticing the $410 price tag and getting out of there.
She ended up with a nice pair for a fair price that should work well tonight for dinner.
We went for lunch at ACME Oyster Hosue, which was a fun joint, with great New Orleans traditional food. We ordered a bunch of stuff for sharing, including: A Fried Oyster and Shrimp Po' Boy, Coleslaw, a cup of seafood gumbo and a smoked sausage. Sounds like alot, but it wasn't too much....and it was all fantastic. Check the photos for soem yummy viewing.
We relaxed at the hotel after lunch, waiting for about 4pm to take off for the Garden district to have a walk around and for dinner at The Rum House. First off, we walked to the Garden District, which took us about 30 to 45 minutes. It also rained on and off during the walk there so we had to hide out under various awnings and balconies. It sucked, but was fun at the same time. Funny how that happens. Once we arrived in the Garden District itself, we walked up and down the streets, looking at the beautiful huge houses, the large trees lining the streets, the Lafeyette Cemetery (which was closed unfortunately), a cute
bookstore, and the houses of a few celebrities. Some of the notable houses we saw were the house from the Benjamin Button movie, Sandra Bullock's house, and what we were pretty sure was John Goodman's house (which used to be Trent Reznor's house). We also took a look at and into the famous restaurant Commander's Palace. Overall the neighbourhood was beautiful.
We finished the tour at our dinner spot, The Rum House. It is a caribbean Taqueria, with unique tacos and such. Wow was it busy. We planned this for a long time, so were willing to wait the hour for a table. We sat and waited patiently with a massive group of other people waiting for seats inside or outside. After about an hour we were seated inside the restaurant (or as I learned quickly....bar). The Rum House is easily the loudest restaurant I've ever been in. People were actually screaming. It was an all out assault on the senses. It was cute and lively and fun and upbeat, but really it is a very loud bar to eat dinner in. We ordered 3 tacos each with sides. We had:
Brisket taco
Fried Oyster taco
Pulled Pork
taco
Calypso Beef taco
Jerk Chicken taco
Fried Shrimp taco
Coleslaw and Grilled Veggies
The food was good. Not great, but definitely good. Very creative with so many options. But loud as hell.
After dinner we walked the 40 minutes back to the hotel, rested for 15 minutes, then went out for dessert at House of Blues (bread pudding with bourbon caramel) , the went to The Spotted Cat.
The Spotted Cat is a music club on Frenchman St where you can see live traditional jazz. It was amazing. There was a 1 drink minimum, so we had a shot of bourbon each (first for both of us) and we watched an amazing show. The Shotgun Jazz Band played, and they were so damn amazing. They were very oldtime and authentic, with singer, trumpet, trombone, banjo, drum, sax/clarinet and bass. It was like being transported back in time. The club was tiny, smokey, and there were some really talented dancer swinging on the tiny dancefloor in front of the band. What an experience. Check out the photos and videos (our video was too big...booo....watch the youtube stuff for the idea) for a taste.
And that was
the end of the night. We left at 11 or so, and headed back for the long walk across town to the hotel. Luckily a bike cab guy asked us if we wanted a ride, and the price was right, so we got a nice bike ride back to the hotel.
And we slept.
