Let me start by saying I Love New Orleans! It is a crazy wild city full of life!
I arrived and immediately checked into the India Hostel. This was my fist hostel experience in the US. I had a great time. As always I met people from all over the globe. I got some tips on Brazil and other South American countries. I strongly recommend this hostel. Its owned by a couple of Aussies. They are very helpful. The hostel has lots of lounge rooms, a big screen tv, and a pool.
I rode the cable car into town. I met a couple of men from Ireland. They had just finished watching the rugby game and were excited to see Ireland win. They gave me some tips on what to see while I was in New Orleans. One of the men made the comment" I'd like to travel the world". I said you can, sell everything. Its a sacrafice but its worth it. Life is about choices, only you can change your life. He smiled and agreed.
I set off to see the river front along the Mississippi River. It was a great day. The city was
alive! You could hear Jazz, R&B, Blues,Country and Rock music. I was watching the dance floor of a club come to life, when a man in a lime green tshirt asked me to dance. I said I don't like to dance, he refused to take no for an answer. I then explained I didn't know to dance.( I know I know I lied but you would have too.) This couple next to me was almost crying in laughter when they saw him give me a dance lesson. I then pointed to my fake wedding ring and said my husband should be coming anytime. The woman next to me heard this and said isn't that your husband coming now. With that the man in the green shirt left. We were laughing so hard. Fake wedding rings are life savers!
The next day I set out to visit the cemetery. They bury the dead above ground due to the floods. Some families have tombs with twenty familiy members. Its erie. I also went to the Garden District. The homes here are incredible. I went to the French Quarter to try the chickory coffee and bienet. It was awesome. I shared my
table with a couple from Chicago. Danny and Linda were great! They had traveled quite a bit and were enthusiatic about sharing their adventures. Linda had been to Israel quite a few times and encouraged me to go. I will go to Israel, not sure when, but I am going. =>
I went to the French Market. I met Lalo a jewlery designer. He is a traveler after my own heart. Like me he is a free spirit. He told me of his several adventures in the States and in Mexico. I asked him what brought him to New Orleans and he said the wind. I loved this answer. The wind often delivers me to new destinations. => Lalo asked me to pick out a stone and said he wanted to make me something special. He made me the most beautiful pendent. Lalo sent me an email a few days later and said he was going on a road trip. He said I opened his eyes. I smiled, the travel bug is contageous.
I met Fleu, originally from Senegal. I loved him! He is so happy and positive. He told me about his trials and tribulations during his
ten years in America. He spoke of how hard it was learning English, but to hear him speak you would think English was his first language. He told me about Katrina, and how he lost everything and was sent to Oakland , California. He said the people there were so kind and loving. He hopes to go back one day. He told me how important it is to have faith. I have often said" It doesn't matter what religion you practise as long as you have faith. Life is too difficult to do alone, you need faith. He smiled and agreed with me.
I am so blessed to have these experiences. This is why I love traveling. I love people and the lessons I learn along the way. => Peace and Blessings!
