Geo: 39.0567, -95.6775This will be a short entry today and very short on photos. We left Denver at 6:35 and 66 degrees. We had a lot of miles to cover today, and had been warned that traffic in Denver would be bad, so we left early. And even at that early hour, we got held up for about half an hour just getting out of town. But we finally got to the highway and pointed the car east. Now, I know that Kansas, as part of the heartland of America, feeds us (and a lot of other countries in the world) and the people here are very nice (well, most of them, with the exception of the AO who would not let us merge into traffic…he needs a courtesy lesson from my friends in Arkansas), but ... read more

I FORGOT ALL ABOUT DRAWING THE MAP FOR MY PREVIOUS ENTRIES. THE MAP I POST WITH THIS BLOG IS FOR EVERYWHERE SINCE I LEFT PARK CITY The one about Corn and Hay and Oil Wells I woke up at 4:30, but there was no way I was getting out of bed that early. I took the much needed bio break (now that I am back at a more normal altitude and humidity level, my feet are starting to swell again, and when I lay down, well, what goes in works its way out……frequently). I got up at 7, and decided I didn’t want to drive facing east into the sun, so I hung around until 9. About 6 other RVs showed up sometime during the night and all were gone before me. I saw the owner, ... read more

Just outside of Topeka, KS is the small community of Overbrook. The American Legion Post located here has agreed to let me use their UH-1 Huey helicopter on one of my photo-shoots. This will be the third image in the Veteran’s Burdens series and will focus on what our service members left behind in Vietnam, of themselves and the friends made and lost. After spending about an hour there taking test shots and looking at angles, it was time to pack everything up and head to Topeka. We head west out Highway 56 but instead of taking 75 north, we took a side road that ran parallel to it. Glad we did because just south of Topeka we came across a small park called Wakarusa Park that offered some good photo opportunities and a nice break ... read more

I leave for my travels in tomorrow morning, and will arrive in Malta on "Day 1.". Bills are paid, flowers watered, laundry in the dryer.... I just "checked in" with Delta, and enjoyed this part of the boarding pass: the boarding pass for Malta says "Malta, Malta, Malta," no seat information, time, etc. I hope that is not a problem. But, here I come. Next post will not be from Topeka Kansas!... read more

I picked up our foreign currency from the bank. It makes you feel rich, all those 10,000 notes from Hungary! Actually they are worth around $40.00 USD. I got a few Euros, Croatian Kunas, and Hungarian Forints, so we won't starve.... read more

4 days and counting down.... I have spent the morning REpacking!!! Space is very precious in a 16"x24"x8" suitcase (yes, I measured it)... that is 3072 cubic inches, or a little less than 2 cubic feet. We will be spending 4 weeks around heat, sun, sand and water; another 8 days in the Alps; and inbetween in urban city environments. Shoes are the priority. AND I still have to get the cameras packed.... read more

10 days until I leave on my trip!!! Grades are turned in, students are graduated, summer fun is ahead. Things are beginning to fall into place. I have places to stay in all of the stops except Zagreb and Budapest, and much of the transportation has been researched. Some tickets will have to be purchased the day of, but at least we know where to find the stations and whether to travel by bus or train. Most of my packing is finished, except for the hardest and most important part: the cameras!... read more

The Topeka Zoo finds its home in Gage Park on the Northwestern side of Topeka. It is very easy to get to from Hwy. 40. It is a very clean park and the zoo is well kept and the landscaping is impressive once everything blooms out. The gorilla environment was well thought out and designed. The gorilla was sitting on the ground leaning against a small tree. As a few families gathered at the window and were pointing and whispering their observations, the gorilla casually glanced over at the window, the look in his eyes was unmistakable. I have seen that same look in my son’s eyes right before he does something he knows he’s not supposed to. No one even noticed his hand slowly coming towards his face until his finger was buried knuckle ... read more
