Its probably no big surprise to my friends that I LOVE to try new foods. One of my favorite things to do when traveling is to research what places in that area are considered a must or has some kind of following by the locals. Urbanspoon has become my favorite app for this purpose.
In Indianapolis it gets no bigger than
The Shapiros Deli, as a matter of fact their Rueben sandwhich was voted the #1 iconic sandwhich for Indy during the superbowl. My husbands family has been visiting this place for years. Its a Koscher deli which means things are going to be really fresh. We went to Shapiros for our annivesary because we were tight on money from our move to this city and I wanted to see why it's Rueben voted #1.
When you walk in you realize its kind of like a cafeteria style way of ordering your food. I heard about the meats here but not the desserts. The desserts deserve some fame because they are awesome! Huge slices of cake and cheesecakes. I had to surpress my desire to snap pictures in the line in fear that I would get scolded by my
hubby. We already agreed that we would share a Rueben which consists of tender cornbeef, swiss cheese, sourkruat and a special sauce on sourdough bread. Although you can customized any sandwich in Shapiros the will not let you touch their beloved Rueben. You can choose your sides though. I couldn'tresist the marinated mushrooms but failed to finish them off during our meal. We also went back up to induldge in their desserts and decided on the pecan bars loaded with nuts. The cornbeef Rueben was tender and tasty, but I was disappointed that it wasnt as big as adverstising in the papers during the Superbowl had made it seem. We paid almost $30.00 for the food you see in the picture, so I'm not sure if this is a wise choice if your on a travel budget. However for me, I find the price not something to loose sleep over just to be satisfied that I tried it.
Next on my list was
The Flying Cupcake Bakery on Mass Ave. I'm obessed with cupcakes from watching Cupcake wars on the Food Network Channel, so I had to see what the hype was about on this place. The store itself
is cute and the cupcake look very tempting but the size of one is larger than your average cupcake. Thats always good in my book! Prices range from $3.00 to $3.75 for one. Each cupcake has a cute name and flavors rotate daily. The cake part of the cupcakes were very moist and yummy. I'm very picky about my icings and each cupcake has a diffrent tecture depending on the flavor. The frosting didnt register very high in my book but still delicous.
I have never really happen to visit a Pho shop among my travels but I heard alot of rave about a simple place on S.Emerson here in Indy which happens to be close by our home. When my husbands brother Mike who happens to be a avid traveler took him to
Egg Roll #1 Pho #1 and mentioned its one of his favorites, I had to go! Just a note I want to share: when you see food trucks parked outside because the owners are eating inside a place, you have to suspect its a good place to eat! My hubby took the family to try it out. My favorite is #22 the Rice noodles with
shrimp and beef. Its REALLY good! I would suggest you eat in as the food taste better hot and fresh from the kitchen. I'm pretty sure the food is close to the real thing because alot of vietamese and asian people are eating inside. The reason I bring that fact up is because we traveled to parts of Asia and the people to not spend money on food that is not of good quality and delicious. Think about it, do you see alot of Asian people eating at the chinese buffets that have spread across our country? I didn't think so, because most of the food on the buffet is not considered real asian food in their home countries. Getting back to good find, you should really try it. Well thats it for PT #1 of my food discoveries in Indianapolis. Theres many to conquer still and I will enjoy every minute of it even though my waistline may disagree! (photos below)

Cupcakes!
Gourmet cupcakes are quite trendy these days; I think The Flying Cupcake is definitely the best in town. They even just recently opened a north side shop!
