The Road to Hana
We took this drive along very small mountainside roads - great views! Hi Guys
Well as promised here are a few pics from the end of our week in Hawaii.
Maui is a much prettier island, in fact they call it the Garden Island. We took a trip along the Road to Hana which is a clifftop drive along the north-east coast of the island. Very pretty drive, but very slow - Americans just aren't used to small, windy roads! We stopped and took some photos at Keane pt which is about an hour along the drive - here the waves pounded into the rocks creating some fantastic sights and sounds, breaking over the volcanic lava rock.
We then drove up through the clouds to the summit of the volcano, at about 10,000 ft. We actually cleared the top of the clouds...
The next day we flew back to Oahu, and to our hotel in Honolulu. As I mentioned in the previous blog, we got a great upgrade in the hotel to a suite on the top floor which sounded great (before the earthquake!!) Ginnie then came down with a pretty bad cold, but we did manage to get out for a day and visit Pearl Harbour as I said
Powerful Waves
On the road to Hana at Keane Pt, the waves were great, pounding at the Lava rock coastline before.
The earthquake was pretty brief - it seemed to last about 15 seconds and was at 7.08am on Sunday morning. It registered at 6.7 on the Richter scale, with an after shock 5 mins later that registed at 6. Both pretty big. Fortunately the centre was off another island about 100 miles to the east of us, otherwise it might have been more serious for us! We were half awake when it hit, as we had got up about 30 mins earlier and taken a pic of the lovely sunrise. Ginnie actually thought I was messing about and jumping around on the bed, before she opened her eyes and realised I was still, but it was the whole room that was moving! It felt like it was swaying a couple of meters, like standing on a bridge in strong winds! When the second shock hit 5 mins later the power went out and didn't come back on until just before 9pm that night. We were meant to leave that day, but the airport was closed, so we checked back into the hotel (a room on the 6th floor!) and rearranged our flights. It was a real experience, and
Volcanoes, Earthquakes...
10,000ft at the top of a volcano on Maui one that I'm glad to have had - but not sure Ginnie was so keen!
So we have now arrived in AZ, and have started the admin stuff of bank accounts, phones (we now have numbers and will let you know them, rather than post them on here!) and have established that our stuff should arrive w/c 30th. So we need to get some bits and pieces for the appt, which is small, but perfect for what we need for the next 3/4 months. Swimming pool and Gym look great! Weather is gorgeous, been here 4 days and yet to see a cloud - temp is about 85 degrees, but very dry - no humidity - so it is beautiful! Next task is to buy a car!
So that's it - the trip is over - 9 weeks from leaving Heathrow to arriving here in Phoenix. We have about 6.5 hrs of video and countless photos that we need to sort once our laptop arrives. We have had many fantastic experiences that we will savour for ever - we are both really pleased we did it. Money well spent! And now the next adventure begins! We will continue
Just a great photo!
