The 99 StepsNear the summit at Diamondhead, a famed 99 steps is daunting to look at. After this, a surprise spiral staircase winds up through old military bunkers to the summit and the amazing views of Oahu.
Day 3 (6/24): The weather was wonderful today, warm, but not too humid. This is a good thing, too, as we hiked up Diamondhead today, an old volcano crater. The crater is in an interesting location, with views of the Windward, Waikiki, and other locations. It is said on a clear day, the outlines of other islands in the chain can be seen!
The hike is a 670 foot hike upwards, with stairs dubbed, "the 99". Sheila and I have the proof in paperwork with stamps and dating in place! Most people were sympathetic with Sheila, given that she is very pregnant--a sight not lost on the travelers we have encountered.
After a quick drink, we did a small beach tour and explored the Windward side of O'hau. We went to Makapu'u Beach and then to Kailua Beach. Both were quite beautiful and scenic. Makapu'u Beach has huge, breaking waves and was not safe to swim, but the cliffs were beautiful, and a local lighthouse provided some interesting visuals as well. Kailua Beach is sort of a family oriented beach, with long stretches of sand and activities like kiteboarding, canoeing, and kayaking.
WaikikiA view of Waikiki from Daimondhead.
Makapu'u Point TrailAlthough we passed on the Makapu'u Trail, the light house is visible from Makapu'u point on the beach.
Kaneohe BayAlthough we did not visit this bay, Kaneohe Bay is visible from several roads on our journey. The bay is actually the larges bay in the islands.
