Hi there and welcome on a trip to the HOOMALUHIA BOTANICAL GARDEN......we started out at around 8 in the morning and drove through beautiful mountains before arriving in a town called Kaneohe and as we drove through the gate (which is free to all that visit)the beauty began ,,,,,
This garden was established in 1982, and designed and built by the United States Army Corps of Engineers for flood protection. It is a rainforest garden, with plantings from major tropical regions around the world, grouped into distinct collections that focus on Africa, Hawaii, India and Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Melanesia, the Philippines, Polynesia, and the tropical New World. Special emphasis is placed on conserving plants native to Hawaii and Polynesia, as well as arecaceae, aroids, and heliconias. The garden includes a lake (32 acres) and walking trails, as well as a day use area, campgrounds, and a visitor center with lecture room, exhibition hall, workshop, and botanical library.
We spent three hours driving and walking in and about the whole area which seemed more breathtaking at every turn we took.....we have included some photos which believe me do not do justice of this beautiful Garden.......we then drove back into the town center where we had a great lunch with great service and congeniality ......we then set our return passing through Waimānalo (Waimānalo is the site of Sea Life Park, located near Hawaiʻi Kai on Kalanianaole Highway)and we then slowly made our way along the coast stopping to watch and listen to the sights and sounds of the famous Blow Hole (
) The blowhole is an underwater lava tube with an opening on both sides of it. The water from the ocean enters the tube with each wave and as the tube becomes narrower, the pressure in it increases and the water shoots up into the air above the lava terrace, sometimes up to 30 feet (9 m)....
We then wound our way back to the place we have called home for the past while and enjoyed a BBQ... salad... and a couple of Macadamia Nut Cookies!!!!!!
A hui hou kakou.......Aloha ahiahi
