It was the end of Labor Day weekend and we were packed and ready to roll early on the Monday morning. We were headed for a Corps of Engineer Campground on West Point Lake in Georgia for 4 nights of camping, swimming and relaxing. We had stopped at this campground a year ago coming back from Florida and decided to make it a destination for some old fashioned camping. So off we headed towards LaGrange, GA and the West Point Lake (part of the Chattahoochee river.) We got in about 4PM local time (forgot we lost an hour heading into Eastern time zone) and were told we could have our pick of sites; over 94 folks had pulled out after the Labor Day weekend. We took the car, leaving the RV at the ranger station, and ... read more

Well, this is the first post. I just found this website and thought it would be pretty cool since I'm planning on doing a lot of travelling. So far I have booked a trip to Egypt, where I will visit Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, and Dahab for 14 days from July 27th to August 9th. I hope to arrive in Egypt earlier than July27th so I can check out the western desert and Alexandria, and if I get really lucky a neighboring country as well. Hostels in Egypt are dirt cheap, which is exciting and bothersome at the same time. Oh well, we'll see. In addition to my Egypt trip, I am also planning to go to the Bonnaroo music/arts festival from June 12-15th. Unfortunately, I waited to buy the tickets and now they're $277, not including ... read more

“Whatever Happened to Polio” Roosevelt’s Warm Springs Georgia I had the pleasure of returning to Warm Springs Georgia as the guest of Warren Williams a member of Peachtree Rotary. Last fall I saw the public side of the complex, the museum, avenue of flags and the little white house. This time I got to see the educational and therapeutic side of Roosevelt’s Georgia Warm Springs Foundation. August 11th, 2007 marks the official opening of the “What ever happened to Polio?” exhibit at Roosevelt Warm springs. Thanks to PolioPlus and District 6900, fifty thousand dollars was donated to pay for moving the Smithsonian exhibit here. FDR and Warm Springs were the vanguard of a two pronged attack against the dead epidemic disease, Polio. The first focus was helping the polio patient adapt. It took remarkable ingenuity to ... read more

I accidentally deleted two of my blogs on FDR and Jimmy Carter so I will have to reenter. Warm Springs Georgia was the vacation home and treatment center for FDR when he was President. The warm water felt good and FDR could move his legs a little swimming. There are many photos and videos in the museum that show FDR swimming with kids. He never claimed the warm waters could cure polio it just made him feel better. He also liked to drive his cars down here and he could talk to the people and see how they were enduring the great depression. The museum is full of artifacts of these times including FDR’s swimming suit. Of interest is a family tree showing that FDR was a second cousin to TR or Theodore Roosevelt. Also, it ... read more
